I'd love to see one of the Golden Age detectives in action, so I'd pick Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express. I'd be happy to be there in any capacity. Unfortunately, I'm not smart enough to fill Poirot's shoes, so I guess I'd have to be "the murderer". (No spoilers here, folks!)
Alternatively, I'd love to visit Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles of the late '30s or '40s. I wouldn't want to be any of the pivotal characters in the story, as very few come out of it well. I'd be happy to be General Sternwood's butler, Norris, as he gets to meet Marlowe, see Carmen Sternwood every day (hello, Martha Vickers!), and he makes it out without a bellyful of lead. (less)

Douglas Adams
“But the plans were on display…”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“That’s the display department.”
“With a flashlight.”
“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”
“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”
Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
