Some cheek, some curiosity, and one day you’re being interviewed on Matty Dalrymple’s Expertise To Authority podcast

I feel most of my writing career has happened by accident. I think this is so for most writers. We show up, we knock on doors when we aren’t formally invited, we try things, we inch closer to something that feels right and true, we follow an internal compass we don’t fully understand but seems… Continue reading Some cheek, some curiosity, and one day you’re being interviewed on Matty Dalrymple’s E Read more of this blog post »

Turn Right at the Rainbow by Roz Morris
"This book interested me particularly as my parents have just moved from the family home of 37 years. The househunting was mercifully short but all-consuming, and the possible alternative universes haunt us still a little bit.

The Beginning of Spring by Penelope Fitzgerald
"A delicate story, comedically structured but not played for laughs -- which is something we could say of real life. Certainly convinces as a portrait of life for an English family in Moscow in the early 20th century. "

A short, intriguing, densely written story. The captain of a freighter breaks her own rules and stops the ship so that the whole crew can go swimming. The results are unsettling and no one is quite the same afterwards.

Gavin Maxwell

“I had been working hard at my book; it was one of those rare days of authorship when everything seemed to go right; the words flowed unbidden from my pen, and the time had passed unheeded, so that it was a shock to realise that I had been writing for some six hours.”
Gavin Maxwell, Ring of Bright Water

“For these beings, fall is ever the normal season, the only weather, there be no choice beyond. Where do they come from? The dust. Where do they go? The grave. Does blood stir their veins? No: the night wind. What ticks in their head? The worm. What speaks from their mouth? The toad. What sees from their eye? The snake. What hears with their ear? The abyss between the stars. They sift the human storm for souls, eat flesh of reason, fill tombs with sinners. They frenzy forth....Such are the autumn people.”
Ray Bradbury

“By reading the writings of the most interesting minds in history, we meditate with our own minds and theirs as well. This is to me is a miracle.”
