As a lawyer and daughter of Guatemalan and Cuban bakers, Jessica C. Parra never objects to an extra slice of cake. She’s a Los Angeles native who loves to write about Latinas with big hair (and even bigger dreams), complicated families, cats living their best lives (all nine of them), and the healing magic of acceptance.

When she isn’t drafting books you can find her sipping kombucha, cuddling with her kitties, or co-piloting the Millennium Falcon at Disneyland’s Galaxy’s Edge.

Hi Avani!!

I don't have a Rubi-caliber recipe for the chocolate chip malt cookies BUT I do like to chop up the chocolate molasses chips from See's Candy and sub that for chocolate chips. It adds chocolate and the molasses flavor Rubi wanted to capture! Try it out! You can find them in See's stores or here: https://www.sees.com/milk-chocolate/m...

Enjoy!! (less)

“Two silhouettes blocked out the hard sun. The shapes came into focus as my vision adjusted to the light. One of them revealed itself to be a longboard. The other, the smoking-hot, dripping-wet guy who’d surfed it.”
Jessica Parra , Rubi Ramos's Recipe for Success

“Baking needs to be a marriage of both substance and style. You cannot sacrifice one for another.”
Jessica Parra, Rubi Ramos's Recipe for Success: A Novel

“I was born on an island that stripped me of my family and my dreams, Rubi.... This country gave a family back to me, but my dreams.... I gave them up for you. So you could become everything I couldn't.”
