Author of "The Guardians of Byzantium" historical fiction series which was inspired by the History of Byzantium and History of Rome podcasts. I am an IT consultant by day, swimming coach and aspiring novelist by night. The intricacies of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire are so wonderful and amazing, one cannot lack for story lines. It really is just a matter of delving into the plots and adding in the elements of good story telling to make this incredible era more accessible to everyone. I hope you enjoy our journey through the world of Byzantium ... ...more

There is just so much to write about in Book 2 I'm having to be careful about the number of pages and maybe Book 2 might morph into Books2 and 3 ... We'll see how Hunulf and Co get on chasing "the woman", what does Eutropius do next? How does Alaric cope with being in charge of a Roman defense force... and what is Anthemius doing all this while? We'll meet a few new players too. I'm overwhelmed by some of the great reviews book 1 got, so I'm working hard to ensure that Book 2 does not disappoint!(less)

Good news and bad news ... good news is that Book 3 is in the process of being written, it will definitely happen, the bad news is that will be a delay, as I am in the process of a) finishing off my job in New Zealand in the next two months b) having to find work in the UK when I get back and c) I'm not happy with a good percentage of what I've written for Book 3 so far, so it's getting a bit of a major revamp. If you know anything of the specific period coming up, it's that it's fairly chaotic and Zosimus one of my primary sources, is a bit rubbish and inconsistent with his timelines, and Synesius the eye-witness source dresses everything up so much in his allegorical tale of Aurelian and Caesarius/Eutychainus that it's hard work. So a fair bit of literary skulduggery is required to make the timelines work and keep things consistent, and that is causing some issues too. There will be a Book 3 which may morph into a Book 3 and Book 4, and I'm hoping a Book 5 and 6 too, plus a few short stories, which have popped into my head... Thank you again for the question, sorry I can't be much more specific, but I would hope that Book 3 will be out mid 2026 (I did plan for it to be out late 2025!)(less)

Book 2 is under way

I'm about 70 pages into the next installment of "The Guardians of Byzantium". In this we will meet new characters, find out what happens to people we met in Book 1, and depending on how engrossed we get in the political and military shenanigans, we may make it through to the year 400 ... who knows?
