In The Man Who Was There he told the story of a missing soldier through his belongings. What we carry with us, and more importantly leave behind, speaks volumes. A simple breadstick left half eaten on a table can lead to major plot lines. Did the diner not finish simply because he or she was full? Or did they see a child wandering the streets alone in a tattered dress? Were they running from something and saw a person who knew what they'd done heading their way, so they made a hurried exit out the back?Maybe they received a text and struck it rich but had to be across country by a certain time on a specific day to claim it. Everyday isn't so ordinary if you look beneath the surface. A writer likes to dream day and night about the adventure behind the wall. They see possibility and try to share, because they can't seem to stop seeing the "what ifs" that transported them as a child. They live between the lines. Actually, everything can be a plot for a book. Writer's steal a ton from reality.(less)

Welcome to myself.

I have been writing for years. Not in journals but in creating worlds that transform this one. I wrote in feminist groups and in local gatherings My early attempts were bad. So, I began to read. I saw that there was craft in the writing of the most simple language. How choosing time and tone made all the difference, and how editing was important. What you remove and leave out is as compelling as w Read more of this blog post »

Lewis Carroll
“If you don't know where you want to go, then it doesn't matter which path you take.”
Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Lewis Carroll
“Oh, you can't help that,' said the cat. 'We're all mad here.”
Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Toni Morrison
“Suspended between the nastiness of life and the meanness of the dead, she couldn't get interested in leaving life or living it, let alone the fright of two creeping-off boys. Her past had been like her present—intolerable—and since she knew death was anything but forgetfulness, she used the little energy left her for pondering color.”
Toni Morrison, Beloved

Toni Morrison
“I never asked Tolstoy to write for me, a little colored girl in Lorain, Ohio. I never asked [James] Joyce not to mention Catholicism or the world of Dublin. Never. And I don't know why I should be asked to explain your life to you. We have splendid writers to do that, but I am not one of them. It is that business of being universal, a word hopelessly stripped of meaning for me. Faulkner wrote what I suppose could be called regional literature and had it published all over the world. That's what I wish to do. If I tried to write a universal novel, it would be water. Behind this question is the suggestion that to write for black people is somehow to diminish the writing. From my perspective there are only black people. When I say 'people,' that's what I mean.”
Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison
“Beauty was not simply something to behold; it was something one could do.”
Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye

Gael Carnes Above are reviews received on Amazon. I wanted to link them, but the site wouldn't let me. I read that it was ok to paste them here but not on the rest of the site.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Portrait of Depression
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2022
The devastation of depression is talked about a great deal these days, but Gael Carnes provides us with an intimate portrait of the disease that is both starkly honest and empathetic. The story and characters draw us in until every overcast afternoon, ominous glance and hopeless fear becomes our own. At a time in our culture when genuine empathy and truth both appear to be in short supply, this is an important story.

Secret Burials brings us intimately into Roberta's inner world as she struggles to find her way through intrusive thoughts, images, and depression. This book features a masterful literary style that is rich in setting and character details and yet is highly readable. Roberta's world is not a rom-com romp in Hallmark Land, and that's what makes its close-to-the- nerve authenticity so much more satisfying.
