Riley is an inspector in the newly formed Detective Department at Scotland Yard. He's also titled - Lord Riley - a marquess's younger son, so he's torn in many respects. This one is about a murder in a brothel! Everyone thinks Riley won't make much effort to find the killer of a prostitute, which just goes to show how little they know him!

Truth and Fiction

They say that truth is stranger than fiction, and I can't help but agree with the ubiquitous them. Take the Victorians. A finer example of sanctimonious moral standards it's hard to imagine at any time in British history. “anyone to keep his secret. Not”
Wendy Soliman, A Duke by Default

“when he observed Kitty with her. “Damnation, can’t that girl do anything she’s told!” Wickham thumped the wall with his clenched fist, a red mist of anger blurring his vision. Lydia might be persuaded to keep his presence here”
