Stephanie Kegan was born in North Dakota and raised in the much warmer Southern California. After graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in history, she worked at mostly numbing jobs until she could support herself as a writer. Her new novel Golden State—coming from Simon & Schuster in 2015—explores how fragile the foundation of an ordinary life can be. She is the author of a previous novel, The Baby, many magazine articles and series of guidebooks published by Chronicle Books. Stephanie lives in Los Angeles with her family.

Are any aspects of your latest book, Golden State, autobiographical? Since it is set in Berkeley where you went to college, was it just a familiar geographical setting or was there more that was taken from your own life? PS - I loved the book and in my 5 star Goodreads review described it as an exciting read, a deeply moving character study, and a thought provoking discussion about modern society.

My novel isn't autobiographical, but I drew from elements of my own experience. I did attend UC Berkeley at a time when there was hardly any tuition and I really did know a guy--and many others in similar financial circumstances--who arrived at Berkeley on a Greyhound bus with a bicycle and thirty dollars in his pocket. And I certainly feel bad that kids today have a much rougher time being able to afford to go there. Thank you for asking!
