A Reminder

Just a reminder that I have moved my blog now to wordpress and have incorporated it into my website. I miss the ease of blogger, but am sure I will get the hang of wordpress one day!
Soon there will be a new competition there. Not sure what the prize will be yet. Still thinking about it. Read more of this blog post »

“You have traveled far, but the hardest part of a journey is always the next step.”
Jackie Morris, East of the Sun, West of the Moon

“When he walked in her dreams moths rose from the earth where his paws touched the ground, as if born from his footfall. They followed him, a cloud of moths of all colours. And the music of moth wings followed him. And the dancing lights of the northern sky hung in his breath. In his eyes, a world of wild. On his coat, the colours of snow. In his voice, the wisdom of untamed things.”
Jackie Morris, The Unwinding

“She whispered into the ear of the dreaming bear. If I said that my love for you was like the spaces between the notes of a wren's song, would you understand? Would you perceive my love to be, therefore, hardly present, almost nothing?”
Jackie Morris, The Unwinding

Jackie Yes, indeed. I have to say that I almost didn't let her agree to marriage, because I too felt the same as you from the traditional telling of the story. But he did learn a bit from his mistake. Had it been me I would have told him what I thought of a man willing to stand by and let his love burn. But I think she is more than strong enough in the relationship to stand her own ground.
So many of these tales frustrate me. Passive heroines are not to my taste.
Thanks for getting back to me. Really appreciate that. Wanted to know what it was that gave you doubts. And they are wise doubts indeed.

Nafiza Hi Jackie, thank you for the friend request. I enjoyed your book a lot; it is possibly the only version of the fairy tale that I have found to my taste. My reservations, as I mentioned in my review, arise from the romance. I do not like the romance, or, to be more accurate, the prince. I felt like he imposed his reality on the protagonist when he decided that she was lost and suffering in the forest and his actions from then on are direct reactions to this reality he has thought up. I feel like the protagonist had no choice in the matter and this makes me feel really queasy. I would love a retelling where the protagonist falls in love with someone other than the prince. You address this quite well in your version and I appreciated that a lot but I still don't like him. I hope my answer is sufficient.
