Lori Banov Kaufmann grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. She is a debut fiction author at the ripe young age of 61 having had a twisty, detour-filled career path.

She has a BA from Princeton University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. While in grad school, she and her husband Yadin wrote the Ice Cream Lover’s Guide to Boston. While this important addition to the literary canon never made it onto the bestseller lists, it did get the authors a lot of free ice cream!

The intervening years were filled with raising a family and working as a strategy consultant for high-tech companies. She even tried to invent a device to kill head lice (which sadly didn’t work!) Upon retiring from consulting, Lori went back to one of her first love

There are so many fascinating women in the Bible who deserve to have their stories told. I've always wondered about Pharaoh's daughter who rescued Moses, an Israelite baby. She raised him as her own in her father's palace while he was plotting the annihilation of the Israelite people. There must be so much intrigue and drama in that story, don't you think? After all, it would be like Hitler's daughter adopting a Jewish baby.

That said, I think my next book will be set in the more recent past, possibly the early 1900's. I'm still drawn to strong women who find themselves caught up in watershed moments of history. I'll let you know when I figure it out!

Good question!

I didn’t set out to write about this period. I fell into it by accident! I was inspired to write Esther’s story after learning about the discovery of her two-thousand year-old gravestone, an exciting and important archaeological find. It was the mystery behind the stone that drew me in and made me want to know more. Who was she? How did a girl from Jerusalem become a Roman woman buried in Italy?

And from there, I began to research the time period. I was stunned that I knew so little about one of the most formative eras in human history. It is a fascinating period that has many parallels with our world today, especially the civil discord and religious fanaticism.

"I just love this book. It's very disturbing and sad, and somewhat a happy ending. Plus a little confusing at times, I get lost with history easily. Anyway, I love the dedication of how much work and time Kaufman put into this story. I'm impressed. Lo" Read more of this review »

“She let the meaning of his words sink in. He wanted her with him. To stay.
She heard Miriam whisper in her ear: What you think you know isn't always so.”
Lori Banov Kaufmann, Rebel Daughter

“Let me tell you something: once before-- a long, long time ago--the people of Jerusalem were defeated. The first Temple, the one King Solomon built, was destroyed. The people were taken captive to Babylon. Do you know what the prophet Jeremiah told them?" [...] "Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat the fruit. Marry and have sons and daughters." He paused, then continued, "in other words, live. Live... And remember.”
Lori Banov Kaufmann, Rebel Daughter

“You won't feel like this forever," he said. "I know." He stroked her hair and began to talk. At first, he spoke haltingly, as if the words were so heavy, he could hardly carry them. He told her stories that couldn't be told in the day or to her face”
