Review of Sadie, Call the Polis

Sadie, Call The Polis Sadie, Call The Polis by Kirkland Ciccone

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sadie, Call the Polis is a dark comedy set in Scotland, where we follow the journey of offbeat heroine Sadie Relish. In 1976, a heatwave 'hot enough to melt concrete' descends on Scotland, and while everyone wilts in the heat, a woman arrives in Little Denny Road with the keys to her new council flat. She is glamorous, indomitable Read more of this blog post »

“Fiona fixed a slice of bread to the toasting fork and held it out to the flames. So began the ritual. Hot butter melted off the slices of toast and dribbled onto their fingers.”
Alex Nye, Shiver

“All around him the branches of the trees had frozen solid, reaching out white fingers of glass that looked as if they would shatter in any breeze, or chime like musical bells. The world looked strangely magical.”
Alex Nye, Chill

“If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger.”
Emily Jane Brontë , Wuthering Heights

Hilary Thank you for recommending A House Called Askival, will give it a try when I find a copy. Glad to see someone appreciates midnight is a place, I read it when I was around 9 and was also struck with the image of the snatcher. I found the book in a jumble sale when expecting my first child and have read it many times since ( he is now 15 ) It's a wonderful book to read aloud, has so many interesting elements, we were always fascinated by the idea of toshing and instantly realised what the saying 'what a load of tosh ' means ! I loved the coziness of the ice house and recorder playing. "I didn't much care for my slice of Clutterby pie " is a very well thought out ending for that character. I have only just discovered good reads, have found it really good so far, have discovered some great books, not completely sure how it works yet though ! Regards Hilary
