'I started writing about the British cavalry who fought Napoleon for the simple reason that they were roundly criticised by just about every historian and his dog. Why?

I had to find out, because it just didn't seem fair. And it wasn't, as I soon discovered.

So, because I'm not a real historian, I wrote a novel. About two young cavalry recruits sent to Portugal... and it sort-of spiralled from there!'

Jonathan Hopkins is married with one daughter, two horses, a cat and a cocker spaniel with a heart murmur.
Born and brought up on the South Wales coast, he still lives there.
