As a native of Colorado and a first-generation American, I instinctively look west. All my life, layers of blue mountains have shaped my horizon, and the endless prairie ends at my home in the foothills of the Rockies. Orchids, Olympics, Imbolc...Oh, My!

Having finished only one book since my last post, I decided to bring you a little mid-winter color to brighten things up. The Denver Botanic Gardens has an annual orchid exhibit--I missed it last year, but was desperately in need of color so went last Friday.

This is the display at the entry to the greenhouse.

"I enjoyed this mystery set in Yorkshire just after WWI. The main character, Kate Shackleton, is not quite a war widow, as her husband has remained missing in action. She takes on a case for a friend--her first ever paid endeavor.

At the Water's Edge by Sara Gruen
"So very, excrutiatingly, needlessly, over-dramatically, agonizingly over-written. The pathos practically drips off the pages with no humor and very little action to provide release.

And it's really a shame, because Gruen has a good story and has some " Read more of this review »

I finish this book because of it setting. But it had one of the dumbest plots and some of the most irritating characters

“It is a long way to Ireland, Janet, and I am sorry to send my little friend on such weary travels: but if I can't do better, how is it to be helped? Are you anything akin to me, do you think, Jane?"

I could risk no sort of answer by this time: my heart was still.

"Because, he said, "I sometimes have a queer feeling with regard to you - especially when you are near me, as now: it is as if I had a string somewhere under my left ribs, tightly and inextricably knotted to a similar string situated in the corresponding quarter of your little frame. And if that boisterous channel, and two hundred miles or so of land some broad between us, I am afraid that cord of communion will be snapt; and then I've a nervous notion I should take to bleeding inwardly. As for you, - you'd forget me.”

Janet Smith Thanks for the comment about Intimations of Austen--so glad you enjoyed my stories! They were truly a labor of love.

Meredith (Austenesque Reviews) Thanks for accepting my friend request. I enjoyed your book very much! I loved the compilation of different Austen characters and books, as well as, the original ideas and stories you created.
