James grew up in the midst of mental illness and depression. He, himself, struggled in school due to a learning disability.

Without a positive male role model, James learned how difficult it can be for children to realize their true potential. Having acquired a love for fantasy at a young age, he began to write stories of his own, providing children and teens with messages of faith, hope, and insight.

You can find this and other quotes at https://jamesmaxon.com/James-Maxon-In... , which list the date they were written. I revised it slightly at some point, as the beginning was “Who should we be trying to make the most proud?” While I like that way better, I think “proudest” is more grammatically correct. Since it’s been nearly 10 years, I don’t remember the exact situation, but I’m pretty sure it came due to frustrations at work. Trying to please the President there was akin to banging one’s head against a wall. Some people are impossible to please no matter how hard you try. And then it occurred to me: so what? He’s not the one I should be trying to make the most proud, anyway. From there the thought expanded to other situations that people may find themselves in. While it’s good to do our best for those in our lives, at the end of the day, what matters most is pleasing God. In that, there’s a sort of relief and release of earthly burden, and a change in focus.(less)

New serialized story!

It’s been a while, but I released a new book! Well, not a book exactly, but a serialized story. (Worked for Charles Dickens, right?) With Amazon’s launch of the new Kindle Vella platform, my story, Sprocket: A Digital Entity, is live starting today! Check it out and let me know what you think. The first 3 episodes are free.

I’ve enjoyed this series from beginning to end. For the most part, this final book did a good job of closing out Dan’s journey home. That said, I think the story itself needed more chapters or at least an epilogue to tie a few things up. Such as more ...more

“If you measure your life by what you own, the cavern of your heart will never be filled.”
James D. Maxon

“Who should we be trying to make the most proud? Our family? Our friends? Our teachers or bosses? What about the one who molded us out of the earth itself, who formed us like clay, and instilled within us the very breath of life that shaped the universe?”
James D. Maxon

“Fiction gives us a reach into the lives of individuals that would otherwise be but a closed door. If we are gifted with a desire to tell tales, then we should tell them . . . if only to reach but a few.”

“Heart isn’t something you find in soap operas and Harlequin novels. It’s that pure essence–sheltered deep inside–that occasionally makes its way to the surface. Give heed lest it ever trend to waste.”
James D. Maxon

“Every good book should be entertaining. A good book will be more; it must not be less. Entertainment…is like a qualifying examination. If a fiction can’t provide that, we may be excused from inquiring into its higher qualities.”
C.S. Lewis
