Julie lives on a tidal inlet on Westernport Bay in Victoria, Australia. Her stories have been broadcast on radio and included in Australian anthologies and journals. She's worked as an early literacy consultant, a Read Aloud facilitator, as well as lots of other roles, most of which involved a love of books.

Her new young adult novel Messages For Sun is an expanded edition of Saltwater Moons published by Hachette Livre in 2008 and no longer in print. Copyright restrictions required the replacement of the original poems, leading to a re-write and the addition of an extra chapter at the end. How do you deal with writer’s block?

That can be diffic…moreI make the time to write without changing anything. That's the key for me. Writing forwards without re-reading what's been written. That can be difficult on the computer, so I tend to write my way out of a block with a pen and paper. Never straight into a notebook though. When I'm feeling like I can't come close to articulating whatever it is that needs to be said, I always want to tear the pages out after I've written on them. Is this sounding crazy? It actually feels a little bit crazy writing all this down, the way I have learnt to trick myself. So it goes like this. I have these rolls of paper I bought in Japan. They weren't expensive and the paper has a lovely semi-transparent texture. I tear off a piece and then write on that torn bit of paper with a very fine felt tip pen. And then once I start I tend to want to tear off more pieces. During this time I write whatever comes up. That's one of the important principles I learnt from Barbara Turner-Vesselago at her Freefall writing workshops. Write what comes up. When I've finished, I place them inside the covers of my hand-made notebook. I don't read what I've written for at least a few days. That's when I paste the bits of paper into my notebook. There has only ever been one time that I have discarded what I wrote. I've got to love my notebooks. I consider them the keys to my stories. (less)

Messages for Sun book trailer

I'm so excited about the just-released book trailer for Messages For Sun. It's produced by Jonathon Gittus. His short films have won major awards as well as being screened at international festivals. (OK, so I am his Mum but everything I've said is true!)
