It's always fun to decide where to set a book or series--I tend to think of the setting as another character in the book, and it has to come off as authentic as the people I'm writing about. I've lived in Manhattan and worked in the Hell's Kitchen/Theatre District for many years, so I know Jimmy McSwain's world very well. That series is interesting is because it's a mix of real and fictional places. As opposed to White Pine and Cane's Inlet, both of them wholly fictional. I grew up in Upstate New York, so I know the sensibility of small town life up there. But for White Pine, I did have to do some research, notably on the terrain of the mountains, lakes, and valleys. As for Cane's Inlet, I've been dividing my time between the Jersey Shore and New York City for the past two years. I had the idea for the new series for a few years, but couldn't settle on where to set it. Once I discovered towns like Asbury Park and Seaside Heights and Red Bank, Cane's Inlet started to come into focus. It's a composite of those, along with some elements of my own. I also had to create the Village of Eden for the Edenwood Saga. The research I did for the Passport to a Fling series was always fun--nothing like visiting Paris, Rome, and London for inspiration!
