| This is a sweet, brief meditation, with actionable moves toward the grace of peace, with robust scriptural and church father support, and many consolations. I listened to it, and at just over two hours, it's quick and easily digestible. I know I will ...more | |

“It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which,if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree helping each other to one or the other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all of our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.”

“Actually I am a Christian, and indeed a Roman Catholic, so that I do not expect 'history' to be anything but a 'long defeat' - though it contains (and in a legend may contain more clearly and movingly) some samples or glimpses of final victory. (Letter #195)”

So far, I can't put it down. I agree: I could read about Hemingway forever. What a life! Thank you, Nancy.
Very interested in reading "Hotel Florida" and will be looking for your review. I just finished "Papa: Hemingway in Key West", which you probably have read since this is a non-fiction account of some of the areas of his life and Key West history that you touched on in "Hemingway's Girl" (which I loved, BTW!) It never ceases to amaze me that, for a man who did not live much beyond middle age, Hemingway packed so many varied and completely separate experiences into his life. Seems we could read about him forever! Looking forward to your review
