My newest publications are “Because of This Night,” a collection of paintings and Oulipo poems included in *Triple No. 14* and “I Would Prefer Not To,” a collection of line drawings in *Triple No. 8* (both published by Ravenna Press). I am the author/illustrator of the graphic novel *The Tommy Plans* (Spuyten Duyvil, 2014), set in Texas during the Cold War (to comic effect). "Coyotes," a short story included in the anthology *New Border Voices* was published by Texas A&M University Press, in 2014. *Triple No. 1* (Ravenna, 2012) includes two collections of my drawings, a wordless erotic series "The Amores" and the supernatural illustrated story "The Sorrows of Young Hemdlos." *Disbelief*, my novella about the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge in ...more

Dr Jesus and Mr Dead excerpt

An excerpt from my novel *Dr Jesus and Mr Dead* is now downloadable at http://cooprenner.com/drjesus.html
The excerpt includes the complete prologue and sections of two chapters, one each from book one and book two. The novel deals with the bubonic plague and a diabolic character who loves to spread pain.

A sort of society novel, a sort of love story—maybe Wharton’s milieu—but with Crane’s characteristic lean obliquity.

Well written and full of interesting facts but simply too much. It just goes on and on. At 250 pages it would have been fine, but more than 400 pages of musings on aspects of German history is simply overload. I read almost 300 pages before surrender ...more

“And I don’t believe in this materialism, in this consumer society, in this capitalism, in this outrageous horror that happens / takes place here…. I really do believe in something, and I call it “a day will come.” And one day it will come. Well, probably it won’t come, since they’ve always destroyed it for us…. It won’t come, and I believe in it anyway. Because if I can’t believe in it anymore then I can’t write anymore either.”
