Love Affairs & Murder! New book!

I'm excited to tell you that on February 14th, 2018, the first book in my mystery series, Love Affairs & Murder Book One: A Bullet for My Valentine, was published. The series is set in Suffolk County, on Long Island. It takes place mostly in the Hamptons. The story also features a main detective, Homicide Detective Rachel Gunn.

It was fun for me to write this first book. It is my first stab at writing a mystery, which is the type of books I want to write. I also challenged myself to write the book and meet the deadline. There are three more books that I intend to put out this year intros series. The next one is due to be published in May.

If you'd like to give the book a look, it is available on Amazon as a paperback, and on Amazon Kindle. Love Affairs & Murder (Book One) A Bullet for My Valentine

I met Author James Patterson

I met James Patterson!

I want to tell you about when I met author James Patterson. It was a rainy evening in Huntington, on September 6th, 2017. The Book Revue, hosted a book signing for James Patterson and his wife Susan. It was for a children’s book they had co-authored, Big Words for Little Geniuses’. I had left work early to make sure I got there on time. I had been excited to go to this book signing for weeks. The event was due to start at 7:00 PM. I got to The Book Revue at a quarter to six. There were already people taking seats waiting for the Patterson’s. I knew I would get hungry and would want to get out of there once that happened, so I quickly went to the corner pizzeria on New York Avenue, Lil’ Vincent’s Pizza. I ordered two slices and a root beer. I stuffed them in my face, and got back to the book store.

Once back at the book store, I looked for a James Patterson book to get signed. I was looking for one from his Alex Cross series, because those were the books I read the most. That’s when I met a sales woman from the book store, her name was Beth. She was very busy making sure everyone had the correct books for the signing. Beth informed me that there were only two books that would be able to get signed, Big Words for Little Genius’s and The Store. The Store was James Patterson’s latest thriller to come out, which he co – authored with Richard DiLallo. With my choices narrowed down for me, I went with The Store. (Creepy, just like in the book!) When I purchased my book to get signed, the clerk asked me if I wanted a bag, of course I did, because it was a rainy night. I also got a card with the letter B on it. I was told that when the book signing began, that I would wait till my group, the B group was called. I then went and found a seat and waited for the Patterson’s to arrive.

While we wait, I’d like to tell you that I don’t often go to book signings. I had gone to one other at The Book Revue, and it was for author Harlan Coben. I am an author and I wanted to see what a book signing would be like. I definitely wanted to go to James Patterson’s book signing, because I have read all the Alex Cross books, and a lot of the others. I had recently taken James Patterson’s Master Class on writing, at masterclass.com. I’m interested in writing thrillers and mysteries, and as a writer I wanted to see how the worlds best selling author held a book signing. The idea of learn from the best and model them. So, it was partly a reconnaissance mission, in a sense, and partly for fun.

There is also a slightly morbid reason for wanting to go to the book reading and meeting James Patterson, and here it is. Most of the authors and musicians I like are, well, they are dead. Now awhile back, say in 2000, my friend Tom Tartaglia, gave me a copy of Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions. I loved this book. It resembled some of the ideas that I had for stories. I was excited to write! I had mentioned to Tom, and some of our co-workers that I had wanted to meet Kurt Vonnegut. They all had the same answer, which was that they think that he is dead. So, I had given up on the idea of meeting Kurt Vonnegut, but I read his other novels. Then one day, I saw in the book store Man Without a Country, by Kurt Vonnegut. I called my friend Tom. I told him that Kurt Vonnegut is alive! I just bought his new book. Well I thought it was, it turned out that the book was already out for like two years. A month later, I saw in the news that Kurt Vonnegut had passed away, so it goes… that was in 2007. He also lived in Manhattan. Not that I would have stalked him or anything, but I just thought that he only lived like an hour away from my town. That is another reason I wanted to come to the James Patterson book signing, you know to meet him, before, well you know…I wouldn’t be able too. Anyway, lets get back to the event.

More and more of the seats began to fill in front of the podium, it seems like they are going to have a good audience. I began to wonder if I would have time to talk with James Patterson. I doubted it, but if the opportunity did come up, what would I say? Then I thought that’s funny Jack, you come all the way down here to see if you can meet one of your favorite authors, and you don’t even know what you will say if you get the chance to meet him. I will be the first to admit it, not a well thought out plan, I know. Anyway, the store events manager, takes the podium, and introduces James and Susan Patterson. Everyone applauds. James Patterson approaches the microphone and says, “Hello, I’m Stephen King.” This gets a good laugh from the audience.

Susan and James take turns talking about their new book. Susan is crowd shy, and doesn’t talk close enough to the microphone, which is pointed out by a socially sensitive man when he blurts out, “I can’t hear you back here!” Susan apologizes, and gets closer to the microphone, only to pass the conversation to James. He talks about the book, bringing his wife back into the conversation, and then mentions other books, movies, and television shows that will be coming out in the following year. Then James goes to a Q & A with the audience. Next is the book signing and the moment I meet James Patterson.

James and Susan Patterson are whisked away by a store employee to the second floor of the bookstore. The Book Revue Events Director returns to the podium to give directions on what page your book should be opened to for signing, about pictures, etc. Then the A group is directed to a back staircase, while people of the B and C groups are asked to remain seated. I still have not figured out what I will say when I get to the table and I am face to face with James Patterson.

The B group, my group, is now directed towards the back staircase. I really don’t know what to expect from here. I am on line at the bottom of the stairs. I look up and the line goes the length of the store to the front staircase. In front of me are two women, one has blue hair and is wearing ill –fitted black skinny jeans, while her friend looks ill, and as if she just rolled out of bed to come here, she is in her pajamas, hair all disheveled, and wiping at her nose. I notice she has a nose ring and wonder why she wouldn’t take it out if she has a cold. Maybe I’ll ask James his opinion on that, you know after Typhoid Mary slips him the ‘Black Death’, and he in turn will pass it on to me! I won’t ask him about that, but I still haven’t thought of what I will say.

My mind has gone totally blank. I laugh to myself, because I don’t want to seem crazy. I thought that this all reminds me of the scene from A Christmas Story, when Ralphie goes to meet Santa Claus, and tell him that he wants a Red Ryder BB Gun. Ralphie goes up one stair case, blanks out when he gets his opportunity with Santa Claus, and then is sent down the slide. All the waiting and planning on what to say, gone in a flash.

The smell of bacon fills the upstairs, from the café below. I am next in line to get my book signed, and I give the store clerk my iPhone to take a picture of me and James Patterson. I still don’t know what to say, but I guess I’m just going to wing it at this point. I decided to go with a joke. I am handing my book to James Patterson, and I say, “Is this where I can get the free bacon samples…” He has a puzzled look, and then goes to the business of signing me book. I congratulate Susan on her first book. James slides my book towards me. I say, “Thank you, and I really enjoy reading your books.” Then an elf spins me around and shoves me down the slide. I got to the bottom of the stairs and take a look at the signature. I looked around the book store. Not much was going on, as in, people talking about meeting James Patterson. So, I put my book in the bag and headed home. I hustled through the rain to my car. I got in my car, started it up, and thought… Did I just ask James Patterson if he was giving out free bacon samples? Why yes, yes I did. I laughed at my weirdness as I put the car in drive. That is my story about when I met James Patterson.

The Wave

Hey! I wanted to tell you that back in the beginning of October, I had won First place, in the Magical Mystery Tour category, in the Princess Ronkonkoma Productions Poetry Contest. The title of my poem is “The Wave”. Here it is now…

The Wave

By Jack Batcher

Look out to the infinite blue no-where of the ocean

Notice the manifestation of a wave slowly form

Watch the wave as it moves towards the shore

The wave grows in strength and power

Closing in on the shoreline it transitions from no-where to now here

Listen closely as the wave builds to its peak

There is a moment

Where all the magic and mystery of the world hides

Between the wave’s trough and its crest

Silence

A symphony can be heard in the silence

This silence passes quick as a fuse lit on both ends

When the wave breaks

Its crashing on the shoreline sends salty mist into the air

Streaking endless possibilities like Perseids meteor shower on a cloudy night

How many shooting stars did you catch?

How many shooting stars slipped through your fingers and got away?

Those opportunities vanish as the riptide pulls the wave away

Gone forever from the now here of the shoreline

The wave returns back to the infinite blues of no-where.

Thank you for taking the time to read this poem, I hope you enjoyed it.

Hello Virginia, New Book Shout!

Hey! I know I haven't written a blog post in a long while. I've had some personal stuff to work through. It also got me focused on being creative. I have published two new songs and two new books so far this year.

The first song is called "Wild about You!" It is a fun rock song, that I recorded with my friend Brian. Then the new book, a science fiction horror, called
Texas Funeral by Jack Batcher "Texas Funeral". This book was inspired by an article I read with the headline "Zombie Fire Ants in Texas".

The next new book and song share the same title. They are both call "Hello Virginia". This new book is part of a Good Reads book giveaway that runs until September 30th. I'm going to put in all the places to get these books at the end.

"Hello Virginia" is a comedy about two people who decide to move to Virginia Beach, which means they also decided to move in together. It is a comedy in the way a Ben Stiller movie unfolds, one catastrophy leading to the next, but it all works out Hello Virginia by Jack Batcher hilariously in the end. I encourage you to get in on the "Hello Virginia" book giveaway.

I recorded the song "Hello Virginia" with my friend Anthony Rosano. We put the tracks together one day at his home recording studio.

So, thank you for reading this far, and I'm going to wrap it up. The new songs are available for download on iTunes, or anywhere you download music, just search for Jack Batcher. The books are for sale on amazon. They are available on amazon kindle too. Go to my Good Reads Author page. Click on "Hello Virginia" and get in on the giveaway.

See ya on the flip-side,
Jack

Poe-trified!

I'm excited! It is almost Halloween! This Halloween I will be doing something different. I will be reading at the Riverhead Edgar Allan Poe Festival.
I will be reading Poe's short story "Never Bet the Devil Your Head". It is a story with a moral.

I was invited to read my children's book
"Are there Monsters in My Closet?" during the weekend long event and will be reading it five times this weekend! It is something for the Critters and they are calling it "Ghost and Giggles" It should be a lot of fun!

If you are interested in where I will be reading, I have posted on my website, on the events page. http://www.jackbatcher.com

It definitely seems like an interesting event and I am curious to see how the turn out will be.

After the Halloween weekend I am looking forward to the 50,000 words in a month, novel writing challenge! It is National Novel Writers Month in November. I have my title all picked out and ready to Rock! Thats after the Poe-trifiying weekend!
If you'd like give my book a look, I'll add it here for you.

The Art of Sidewalk Diving... 9/9/14

The Art of Sidewalk Diving: A how to guide from Aaaah to Splat!

Recent events have inspired this title. I was walking through a dark outside bar after closing and tripped over a wall. Luckily I got my hands in place before I ate the pavement, but injured my left hand. I find out more from the doctor tomorrow on how I am healing.
Anyway so it made for typing and playing guitar difficult the first week. the doctor had me wear this brace for two weeks and told me to wear it like a cast. I did great the first week, but not so good the second. I taught guitar lessons and well, I'm hear typing!
So, my move is finished with the really great (couldn't have finished it up with out her) help of my girlfriend Leslie. She also kept reminding me not to use my hand!
Last night, I was promoting my books and website www.JackBatcher.com on my friends Janet & Vini Soluri on there madhousetv.com internet tv show
"The Soluri Glory Hour". If you would like to see how my interview went and hear me sing a couple of songs, well here is the link to check it out.
http://www.madhousetv.net/#!soluri-gl...
My Good Reads giveaway of my new book "Burnt Eggs and Scrambled Toast" is going very well and has 253 entrants! That is very exciting! You still have time to enter, get going!
Thank you for checking this out, and I hope to be back on track this Sunday!
See you then...
