TRIP OF A LIFETIME! Part 8
Then we had two days at sea with no stops in a port. It is nice to have a few days to rest before the end of the cruise. Well, we made it back to the main port of Southampton, England. That ended our fourteen-day cruise to the Meditteran and it was a trip of a lifetime. However, we were not done.
We were scheduled to get a ride back to London and spend an entire week there! We drove about two hours with an Uber driver and arrived at our hotel. It is called St. ERMINS. It has been said that Winston Churchill stayed here in the 1940's during WWll, among other famous people in its long history. It was opened in 1899 and has its own honey bees up on the third floor of the building. Also, it has an herb garden on the fourth floor roof.
We checked in and shortly afterwards, decided to do some exploring. It was about 1:30 p.m. so we had the rest of the day to be tourists. We made our way to Victoria Street and as we turned the corner, there stood Westminster Abbey projected against a beautiful big blue sky. The cumulous clouds looked like decorations placed there just for us. We were so excited and began wildly snapping lots of pictures. To come all this way to be so close to an historic place, on such a perfect day, was amazing. We decided to continue exploring and made our way over to the House of Commons and the House of Lords. A form of government our forefathers copied as our Congress. In America, the House and the Senate.
From there it was only a short distance to Big Ben. We found out that the name Big Ben was not actually the clock, but the BIG BELL inside the clock tower! Very interesting! We were getting hungry so we decided to get something to eat right by the hotel. At the OLD STAR PUB, we got fish and chips plus and a good local beer to cap off Day 1 in London.
Oh yeah, I forgot we had a three-hour tour of London that night after dinner. We did plan this tour perfectly because we were not tired yet and it was still early. We hopped aboard the typical double-decker bus you see in photos and postcards. It was a wonderful experience. We chose the upper deck. You get a better look at the sights because it has no roof to limit your view. The weather was perfect too. The tour took us by all the main icons of the city and we listened to a narration of the sights through headphones that were provided. We crossed over the Tower Bridge and while looking straight up at it, took a picture that later that turned out to be one of my favorites. Sometimes buildings or bridges look so amazing at night if they are illuminated with bright lights or even some colored lights to highlight the architecture. A softer light can be effective too.
Anyway, it was a great tour. Part 9 is next of this adventure is next

TRIP OF A LIFETIME! Part 7
Gibraltar was next on the itinerary. A very interesting place to visit. The Rock of Gibraltar is a monolithic limestone promotory located in the British territory of Gibraltar, near the southwestern tip of Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. It is 426 meters high. Most of the Rock's upper area is covered by a nature reserve, which is home to around 300 Barbary macaques. Gibraltar flies the flag of Great Britain even though it is geographically far away.
The excursion to the Rock starts in either a bus that carries around twenty people or a full size Grehound-like bus. Today it's on the smaller one.
Our tour was guided as usual and she spoke three languages. Most of all, you could understand her. Some of the other guides we have had were difficult to understand even though they were speaking English.
As a side note, most of the guests on this cruise were British and we had a hard time with them too. With their strong accents and special words to describe things, it made it a real challenge to figure out what they were saying. Sometimes we would ask them again. Sometimes we had to just nod, smile and say yes. We weren't being rude, we simply didn't understand. Out of three thousand guests, only one hundred and sixty were from the U.S., and most of the remaining were Brits. With very few guests from other countries like China, etc., we were definitely at a disadvantage when trying to ask or answer questions.
Of course, the cruise personnel on the ship speak many languages, but sometimes they aren't right there to help you such as on the elevators. That is where you encounter other passengers that you may not understand what they are saying.
Anyway, Gibraltar flies the flag of Great Britain even though it is geographically far away. We had an exciting tram ride to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. It was an awesome ride. The guide warned us that there were wild monkeys (macaques) qat the top and they can be agressive. They will steal just about anything they think may have food in it. Backpacks, purses, or some treat you might have bought at the cafe there, could be targets. One of the monkeys pushed open the door to the cafe and was sitting on one of the chairs before being chased out by two workers.
Our next adventure was to go to the Siege Tunnels. They were created by carving out tunnels inside the giant Rock. These tunnels provided the military here to defend against enemies and invading armies. We got to enter the tunnels and look at life-long figures and signs explaining its history. Access holes were blasted to create windows for outside air and to position cannons to fire on the enemy. It was amazing to see how large this underground labyrinth was and it's strategic effect on this relatively small piece of land.
Then we headed to Europa Point and it's lighthouse. It is the southernmost tip of Gibraltar. It is flat and on clear days you can see Spain and the mountains of Morroco (Northern Africa) across the Straits of Gibraltar (the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea.)
It was a wonderful experience and just one of many great places we explored on our TRIP OF A LIFETIME! Where are we going to visit after this?

I decided to revisit a trip I took back in May and June of 2017. I never finished my journey on this blog. I took a hiatus from Goodreads. The first 5 parts are still available to read if you look back a little (not that far) in my previous posts. It was 35 days in Europe. Here is the next part.
TRIP OF A LIFETIME! Part 6
Our next port was Provence, our connection to Marseille, France. We had decided to take an excursion (usually a bus ride) to visit the famed Church of Notre Dame de la Garde. It is not to be confused with the Notre Dame in Paris. There are many Notre Dame churches in France. It means "Our Lady" in French.
We stopped at several memorials along the way. It was a cloudy day and we were worried it might rain. We have been lucky so far with the weather. A gray sky would not hamper or disappoint us on this particular day.
We caught a glimpse of the church in the distance and as we got closer, the view became more impressive. The church was perched perfectly on a lofty hill with no other buildings on it. It stood dramatically as a beautiful place of faith. Inside was just as dramatic. We were allowed to take pictures inside and out. Some places of worship do not allow photos inside. Anyway, those pictures will be great memories of a wonderful day in France.
This was a very short entry in my blog. Part 7 is more interesting and more detailed. Where could it be? Until next time, take care! Marc

I bought an RV last year in the middle of the pandemic. We wore masks during the entire transaction and stayed 6 feet away from everyone. We chose short trips close to home. The campgrounds were non-contact stays at different places. We made our reservations online and when we arrived, the reservation telling us which site we were assigned to was tacked to a board. We never saw the office staff and no contact was made with any park employee. Of course, our campsites were always spaced safely away from other campers. All the while we maintained the idea that we would practice safe protocols to avoid catching Covid-19.
I wrote a poem that explains the feeling I had dreaming of places we could visit. It is called "LET'S MAKE MEMORIES."
Let's go in search of memories
And make them along the way
Taking time to share them
Each and every day
Let's go in search of memories
And celebrate what we find
Far away places we may see
And record them in our minds
Let's go in search of memories
There are many we can make
On a journey through the wilderness
Down any road we take
Let's go in search of memories
Not just anyone will do
So thankful you'll spend time with me
You know that I LOVE YOU!
Until next time, take care! Marc

I have been neglecting my blog for too long and I know that nobody has missed it. I was very active back in 2009 and 2010 as I had just published my chapbook "POEMS FROM THE HEART." I was even following certain threads on several groups I was a member of. I enjoyed reading and posting replies to other members. I had been a rather frequent blogger and tried to be involved in many topics.
Then came a period where I was experiencing some health issues, in 2013, and I had reached a point where I was finding it hard to make contributions to the group discussions. I felt it was time to just delete my account. I probably should have just taken a hiatus for a while instead. I was able to retrieve some of my blogs and a couple of other items such as my two short home marketing videos. I lost all of my friends, but strangely retained my followers as an author.
I rejoined GoodReads in December of 2020 and thought I would post regularly, but again I found it hard to find time. I am sure that people may check back for a new post, but they only find the same post they read last time they visited my profile page. So it is my own fault. Maybe I will just start posting some old poems and new ones that have not appeared before. They are in a rhyming style which wasn't very popular when I was a member of the iPoetry group. That became another reason why I decided to cancel my account. I was under the impression that it was just a place to post your poems and read others. It became a reason for rhyming versus prose and the rhyming poems were not considered intellectual enough. So not an inclusive attitude towards those of us that still find it acceptable. Lyrics to beautiful songs use rhyming lines to tell a story or express emotions. Think of all the love songs or just great lyrics you sing to from a memorable favorite. Most of them rhyme. And guess what, it doesn't matter if they don't. They can still be great songs.
Anyway, I hope to try harder to post more often even if no one reads them. Also, I never claimed they were outstanding poems, just heartfelt poetry!

MARC'S MEMOS
1-15-2021
I was in Oklahoma City last October on a trip to visit an elderly relative in Iowa. I made it a point to visit the OKC Memorial that was created after the terrible senseless bombing of the Murrah Federal Building that took so many innocent lives. It was April 19, 1995 that the catastrophe took place. It killed 168 people that included 19 children and babies.
A memorial was created in the exact place that the building stood before its destruction. A reflecting pool was in the center and at each end a wall was constructed to similate the building's dimension. Of course, the ruble had been removed, but it was
still very sobering. There was a chair-like marker that represented every single victim spaced several feet apart that light up at night. I was not able to see it lit. I was there in the daytime. Their names were also engraved on a part of the actual building that was left for effect. Again it was very, very sad.
It is amazing that someone could be that evil. So tragic! I was moved to write a poem. It is titled
INNOCENCE LOST.
A beautiful spring morning
On a fateful April day
Many lives will be taken
As a time clock ticks away
A multi-story building
In the middle of the town
Exploded into history
As it disintegrated to the ground
Frantic scores of people
With panic on their face
Staring at a building
Where ruble fills its space
So many innocent people
Just going about their day
Will sadly end their time on earth
In a really terrible way
A truly misguided person
A skewed belief of strife
Released his sick and evil plan
With no regard for life
God bless the little babies
That never had a chance
To play with other children
To blossom or to dance
The moms, the sons, the daughters
Their shattered future dreams
And daddies won't be coming home
Its hopeless so it seems
We pray that families will start to heal
That time is on their side
They won't forget the ones they loved
And will remember them with pride!
I hope you liked it. Until next time, take care! Marc

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!! I usually don't make a big deal of the new year. At my age it is just another flip of the page on the calendar. Staying up late to party is not my thing (I'm BORING!) It is however, one of the worst years on record for non-war related years in recent memory.
I ran across another short 'sign' that may be hard to embrace since we are still under COVID-19 protocols. Anyway, this is what it said:
Live in the present
Smile at a stranger
Free your mind
More social, less media
Less scrolling, more living
See the beauty in the world
Obviously, many of us are only able to communicate with loved ones thru our electronic devices. So this message needs to be revisted later in the year when the vaccines will have conquered this dreaded virus. Maybe then we all can "See the beauty in the world."
Until next time, take care! Marc

I am so exited to begin blogging again. I had a few health issues to deal with and felt I wasn't participating on a regular basis, so I was away for about three years.
I have a written a few poems since then and would like to share them with you. I was in the iPoetry! Group back then, but my style of poetry was deemed not intellectual or current. I did enter their contests, however, and didn't expect to win. I thought it was supposed to be a forum for poetry, good or bad, and it was the only place for poetry at that time.
Anyway, I am back and am posting my most recent poem. Considering all of the sad things that are happening in this country I felt a poem was appropriate. Please consider the place that it comes from, not for the actual poem. I hope you like it. It is called...
LOVE VS. HATE
Anger and hate
Just don't equate
To love and kindness
There is no debate
'Cross the breadth of the country
To a singular state
The message of LOVE
Will always create
A peaceful existence
We all can relate
We've got to work harder
To determine our fate
The future is fleeting
And we must not wait
To love ALL the people
So we can be great!!!

I have been away for a while and decided I have more to say. It is not world changing and maybe not even interesting to those that may read my posts. I am past the point in my life to worry about that. I am not seeking approval of its content and I do not need a large number of readers. I am just going to post whatever things that are on my mind. If you do decide to read my blog, I will try my best to NOT to be boring.
We have all been through a very traumatic year and I hope our country will come out of this Covid tragedy soon. I wish good health for you and your family.
