I have an online serial novel "In the Shadow of Downtown", a post-apocalyptic, dark fantasy journey about survival and relationships, and our perception of those "outside". Episodes on Substack free twice monthly, Dark but Magical Stories by Rachel H. White.

“Writing is almost like putting together a puzzle, only it’s more like taking a bunch of old family home movies, photographs, scrapbooks, and a dollhouse, and splicing them together, digitally retouching and altering them, dubbing in celebrity voices, and hand-writing the credits until you’ve made them into a major motion picture.”

I am a writer/illustrator of various types of speculative fiction but mostly modern fantasy. I have loved magic, and the people and creatures who live with it

I was sitting outside working on my laptop, and my first impulse was to get up and shout at him. Just the feeling of how dare somebody invade my space--of course a few seconds later my brain registered I better stay out of arm's reach. He stepped back off the gate, but started rambling about he needed to get in. He said he saw something in there, pointing around the other side of the house. Concerned there was some problem on my lot, I questioned what did he see. After some hesitation, where he looked at me doubtfully, he said "My death." I blinked, stood back a bit, and the thought that went through my head was, *He's high.* To me though, that doesn't refute that he experienced something, just it was making him react illogically. Quietly, I said to him, "Well, you're not gonna find it here." He tossed his head and rolled his eyes, like, of course I didn't understand. He went on something about he had to face his death. I don't remember how the conversation went exactly from there. I went inside and woke up my partner, then watched out the door as the guy paced up and down the alley looking at the house, or rather the wall around it. I had this idea like, as a "witch," I should try and talk him down, get him around to realizing it was something within himself he saw (I was assuming he looked at his reflection in one of our windows). However, I'm bad at starting normal conversations, much less something like that! At one point, I was back outside and he came to the gate again saying, "come over here." I again listened but didn't get anywhere near the gate. Eventually though, I changed my energy: I let go of the idea of helping him, and instead flowed energy out, away from me and my house. Seconds later, he walked away up the alley, and we never saw him again.(less)

However, don't know how to tell you what I'd do there because it's naturally chaotic, and in dreams, you operate in the moment. It would depend on what paths appeared before me or who I encountered. My next thought was the Neverwhere underworld. Though perilous, so many characters seemed to have found their niche or destiny there. I'd probably start out just trying to survive, but ultimately would seek out my quest to unlock my inner power, use my gifts for something more meaningful than just sitting at a computer all day. I'm sure there're tons of other worlds, those were just the ones that came to me now.(less)

The Tainted Girl by Rachel H. White
“Rossi pulled the carving tools out. “This was gonna be a surprise. For a while now, I’ve wanted to make you a new cane. And this morning, it was like, well, I have to do it now, so you’ll have time to enjoy it, to wear it out even. ... Part of the development of the piece of art is it being lived on, y’know…before you leave us.” She took a deep breath, looking over her shoulder toward the now shadowy amphitheater. “But then at the moot, with Bianca and…” she trailed off.

The Tainted Girl by Rachel H. White
“Jerry asked in a darker tone, “Tell me, you know about stories. In a story where the king sends a young knight off on an impossible quest, what do people think of the king?”
Rossi raised an eyebrow. “Usually? He’s not a character, he’s just the king. But you’re not some blueblood figurehead--”
“And what will people think of me sending you all off to do the dirty work?”
Rossi closed her eyes, rubbing her forehead. “What people think won’t matter if you don’t come back.”
“I’d rather not come back than sit here and watch you all not come back.”

The movie had a massive influence on me as I watched it over and over as a child. As for the book, I do like it, but I don't think it's necessarily a kids' book. Not that a kid wouldn't enjoy it, but it definitely has themes that make more sense as a ...more

Rachel White added a status update: Doc continued. “We needed to gather a lot of information, from both magical and scientific standpoints. So we are now asking forgiveness instead of permission.”
When Cali nudged her, the figure lifted the hood.
Her gaunt, gray face and deep black hair shaded haunted black eyes. A nasty sibilance went through the crowd.
Doc said, “this is Bianca. Bianca, meet New Village.”

“He held out his hand to Calliope with her hands on the shoulders of the hooded figure. They stepped forward, and when Cali nudged her up onto the dais, the figure hesitated, but then lifted the hood.
Her gaunt face and deep black hair shaded haunted black eyes. A nasty sibilance went through the crowd.
“Everyone,” Doc said, “this is Bianca. Bianca, meet New Village.”
As Rossi stared--as everyone stared--mouths wide open, Bianca took off her cloak. Her skin on her face, arms and legs was not only pale but gray, with scars that were ash-colored. Her eyes weren’t ringed with mats of goo like the man and animals they had burned before. However, those near the front could see, as her eyes flicked from one side of the amphitheater to the other, a thin line of cruddy black residue lined her eyelids and lashes like a gritty mascara. She was tainted.”

“Cali moved around the house gathering things. She took shiny rocks they called “crystals”, dried herbs hanging from the rafters, fancy dishes, weird shapes or bones hanging on the wall, all this random stuff that Bianca just thought were cool decorations.
She didn’t seem satisfied with where she put them, frequently looking from one object to another, swapping them, holding her hands over them again, adding or taking away other objects around them, lining things up and then breaking them up again, all the while shaking her head and muttering.
Bianca couldn’t take her eyes off this process, the raven-raccoon part of her tainted brain that liked shiny objects getting hooked. But she didn’t bother to ask what was going on. She knew she wouldn’t get it.
Still, Cali noticed her watching. “I teach lessons, you know.”
Bianca quirked her mouth to the side. “I don’t have any magic powers. I wouldn’t make a good shaman.”
Cali folded her hands under her chin, smiling. “Everyone has magic powers. It’s just the old ways of the world taught people to give up their own power to others, not trust their instincts, their internal knowing.” She sat back again, shifting around a row of animal teeth. “Most of what I teach is to un-learn or stay out of that mentality, as well as to get in touch with and strengthen your connection to the non-physical aspects of life.”
Bianca shrugged. “I’m pretty messed up though, with everything that’s happened.”
“Honey, the whole world is messed up. It was messed up long before the Disunion.”

“Like Jerry taught us,” Ryan said sagely, “Wise man say, ‘Inside the fence, it’s a dog. Outside the fence, it’s a wolf’.” The others nodded, and Fiona just looked at Rossi sadly.”
