Lian Tanner has been dynamited while scuba diving and arrested while busking. She once spent a week in the jungles of Papua New Guinea, hunting for a Japanese soldier left over from the Second World War. She likes secrets, old bones, and animals that are not what they seem. Nowadays she lives by the beach in southern Tasmania.

Lian's bestselling fantasy series The Keepers won two Aurealis Awards for Best Australian Children's Fantasy and has been translated into eleven languages. Her second series, The Hidden, has been published in Australia/New Zealand and North America. Lian's third series, The Rogues, is set in the same world as The Keepers, and has been translated into Spanish.

And I like the third draft too, because that's when things begin to fall into place and it starts to look more like a proper book. But corrections and edits get a bit boring.

I realised recently that I no longer write just for fun, like I used to. I guess that's inevitable when I'm doing it for a living, but it's a pity - which is why I've recently started a blog for my cat, Harry. There are no deadlines, no plot, and I have no idea where it's going. It's just a chance for me to play. You can read Harry's blog at http://vampiremice.wordpress.com.(less)

Reading aloud

I recently read an article by David Cain on reading aloud. He talks about how he used it to find his way through long, tricky sentences, and again when he was reading a book that was written in dialect. So I thought I’d give it a try.

I’m a very fast reader, which has its advantages, but also means that I skip bits, and don’t always absorb as much as I could. Right now I’m reading a couple of books

I usually really enjoy Mary Balogh's romances. But this one was just plain icky. No, it was more than icky - it was disturbing. Heroine as doormat. Hero as rather dumb abuser with serious mother issues. Plus a 'Pretty Woman' view of prostitution that ...more

Lian Tanner Georgina, your daughter is a fast reader! I'm so glad you both enjoyed the book. I don't know if you are anywhere near either Hobart or Launceston, but if you are, you might like to come to one of the launches of Book 3, which will be out shortly. Keep an eye on my facebook page for details. http://www.facebook.com/LianTannerAuthor. Or my blog. http://liantanner.com.au/whats-happening
