Navjot Kaur is the founder of Saffron Press - a socially conscious, small independent press, reimagining stories to inspire little citizens of change. She is a daughter of immigrants, sister to five siblings and cisgender Mum. Navjot has been advocating for greater equity and representation of the Sikh identity in children's literature for over a decade, through her books and professional facilitation sessions with school districts and undergraduate students. Throughout her years as a classroom teacher, Navjot strived to explore curriculum through an inclusive lens. She continues that work, now as a publisher and author of four titles, with her first A Lion's Mane winning an Honor Books Award for Multicultural and International Awareness.

It told the story of a family who had migrated to Italy from Panjab. The father worked in a local dairy making Parmigiano - the hours were long and the work, not easy. It was not a food I had ever associated with Panjabis before watching this film and for years since, I'd thought about writing a story about cheesemaking - which evolved over the years into something much more. Sanjha Panjab

Before the Radcliffe line in 1947, there was Sanjha Panjab – a territory sharing language, food and agricultural knowledge. Cyril Radcliffe had never even visited the region, nor were the United Nations invited to the conversation – a deliberate decision to avoid delays – the British empire wanted to show that they could govern themselves without any support from the ‘outside’.

Page spread from We Are Cheesemakers laid flat horizontally on a cedar pine background. The spread shows an illustration of undivided Panjab in a traditional Phulkari pattern.
