ron P. swegman is an angler, artist, and author. His first book, Philadelphia on the Fly, introduced a new generation of American outdoor writing with a new set of interests and values: urban angling in the shadow of city skylines; mountain biking to regional fishing destinations; birding as a guide to the fish; and poetic prose writing to describe more than the practical "how-to" strategies for luring fish to the artificial fly. His second, Small Fry: The Lure of the Little, portrays these same themes on a broader geographical canvas. He is a frequent contributor to Fallon's Angler (UK), The Flyfish Journal, Living Ready, On the Water, and Tenkara magazine. His website is http://www.ronpswegman.com. He lives in New York City.

Today, on this most binary of dates, a white hot sun set in a bluebird sky bathed Manhattan in autumnal glory.

Cool it was, actually, to find along a shaded block in the neglected planting pot in front of a brownstone, a fully flowered genus Solidago; a goldenrod.

October is here, and wildflowers are still near. Near as the West side of Manhattan.

Gold in the shade.
