Woodsmoke: A Poem
Lynx the deodorant comes in many scents
None of them particularly pleasant
Each a sort of olfactory equivalent
Of the concept of banter
One scent that Lynx the deodorant does not come in
Is Woodsmoke
Woodsmoke is too good for Lynx
You cannot bottle Woodsmoke
And you most definitely cannot can it
When summer dies
And you remember that autumn is short
And

Each a sort of olfactory equivalent
Of the concept of banter
One scent that Lynx the deodorant does not come in
Is Woodsmoke
Woodsmoke is too good for Lynx
You cannot bottle Woodsmoke

Seventeen Thoughts About Moving House
There are seventeen thoughts about moving house here. I wanted to make it twenty one but I didn’t want what you’re reading to be too long, even though I do in fact have at least twenty one thoughts about moving house. Twenty one is the number of houses I have now lived in. I am not entirely to blame for this. My parents moved a lot when I was growing up. The answer to why I’ve moved so

Cat Update
I've not really been writing about cats for the last couple of years, what with being so busy on 21st Century Yokel and Help The Witch and the early stages of the two books that will come after that, but inevitably cats will sneak into my writing in cameo form - as they did years ago before I'd even written a book with any feline theme - and so many people who've read my books about my cats

A Love Letter To A Beach
The lunar eclipse had happened and people in town were saying it had been doing weird stuff to everyone’s sleep, infiltrating dreams in troubling, vivid ways, but I’m always just a bit out of step with town. I dress differently, like different music and talk differently to most people there, and I slept soundly during the eclipse. I’d got my freaky dreams out of the way a week earlier. In

All Right All Right All Right: 25 Years Of Dazed And Confused
“All I’m saying is that if I ever start referring to these as the best years of my life, remind me to kill myself,” says Randy ‘Pink’ Floyd, towards the end of Dazed And Confused, the joyfully plotless 1993 film directed by Richard Linklater. It could be argued that Dazed And Confused doesn’t have anything so elementary as a “main character” but if it does, Floyd is him. A fully mature adult

DH Lawrence Was My Granddad: A Confession
I did a spoken word event yesterday in Tiverton, Devon, at a lovely shop called Liznojan Books, an independently run mother-and-daughter outlet with delicious, ethically sound cake. At this event I was asked two questions which I've given a fair bit of thought in the intervening hours: one question that I'd been asked a few times before, and one I definitely hadn't. The first question was "

NEWS!
Ralph and I have not done a newsletter on this site before but we have a few new things going on so thought now would be as good a time as any to tell you about them...
As mentioned in this post here, I've had a few problems with paypal cancelling people's subscriptions recently, and I know a lot of people are against using it and have asked if there's an alternative for subs to the site, so

Diary Entries: Spring 2018

Sometimes you have to move away from a place to truly realise that it’s Home. After a winter of researching and writing dark fictional tales in The Peak District, I’ve been back in Devon for a couple of weeks and, despite what for the South West Peninsula is a cold and sluggish spring, I’m feeling elated by the climate, by the sea, by my proximity to Dartmoor, where my

Houses
Sea House
The house leaned out over a corner of the sea almost as if the cliffs were a church wall and the house was a gargoyle stuck to the wall. When we reached our room the first thing I noticed was a portrait of the devil hanging opposite the beds. The devil looked slick and smug in this illustration, like a man you were told to trust by someone who prized cleanliness above all other
