And writing exercises can't hurt if you're starting from scratch and worried about what to start.

If you're stuck on something you've already begun working on, I would suggest rereading what you have written and ask questions aloud about the character. Wait for the subconscious mind to begin providing solutions for your conscious mind to write down and read great published work by writers you admire who are similar to you in style and mood.

If you are really stuck, I would ask yourself if the project still captivates you. I ultimately abandoned a project I was working on because in the end I was writing more from my head than my gut. I wasn't pulled towards it, so it wasn't landing. I have to be pulled to the story and character to want to keep going; it needs to be not be simply a conceptual interest, but more of feeling the character is real and wanting to really get to know him/her and find out what happens to that person.(less)

“A Rabbit Noticed my Condition

I was sad one day and went for a walk;
I sat in a field.
A rabbit noticed my condition and came near.

It often does not take more than that to help
at times-- to just be close to creatures who
are so full of knowing, so full of love that they
don't chat, they just gaze with their marvelous
understanding.

St. John of the Cross
Love Poems From God
Twelve Sacred Voices From the East and West
Translated by Daniel Ladinsky”
