I published my first book in 2004. It became an immediate collector's item. In fact I still have several hundred copies collecting dust in my attic. Critics everywhere said it belonged right up there between Ernest Hemingway and Robert E Howard—on an alphabetical bookshelf.

I write stories that are mostly humorous. Occasionally I try my hand at something more serious. The results vary. My influences include Rocky & Bullwinkle, 1950s sci-fi movies, and silver-age comics.

I live in Texas with my wife and cats. You can contact me at jamesroyhold@gmail.com.

I posted a new story at Smashwords.
It's short enough to reproduce here.

Lilies of the Field

They were, according to neighbors, the sweetest couple you'd ever want to meet. Devoted to each other despite the abject poverty of their lives. Though approaching eighty every morning he shuffled to his job at the newspaper office while she stayed home, patiently waiting his retur Read more of this blog post »

Hands in the Dark by Maxwell Grant
"Bunch of crooks go looking for a hidden cache - a modern-day urban pirate booty, almost. People die and vigilantes take interest.

One of the stronger entries in the series, I should say. The best opening so far, a bit of a mystery that does not involv" Read more of this review »

The Return of Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Judge Dee at Work by Robert van Gulik
"A collection of eight Judge Dee stories, a bit melancholic since it is the last, however mesmerizing. 15 novels (16 if you count two joined to form another) and two short stories books, seventeen are too few... Needless to say enjoyed all from Dutch " Read more of this review »

“A Britisher would say this is jolly exciting."
"What would a German say?" Jo asked.
"I don't know. There's very little excitement in being German.”
James Hold, Out of Texas 14 : The Iron Claw of Destiny, Part 2

“It's been said that life is a series of contradictions. Or, then again, maybe it isn't.”
James Hold, Out of Texas 2 : Chariots of the Texans

“People with "missions" seldom stop to ask if the rest of the world wants to hear about it.”
James Hold, Out of Texas 14 : The Iron Claw of Destiny, Part 2

Topics Mentioning This Author

“Evil is by nature fearful and superstitious; therefore it boasts. And thus boasting it succumbs, not to the power of good, but to its own inherent weakness. The premise of evil is a lie that must be compounded to be maintained, until it collapses of its own weight. Hence its downfall, though not immediate, is inevitable. This then is the true power of good: that good need exert so little to flourish, while evil must give all, and still fail.”
James Hold, Out of Texas 4 : Josie and the Alley Cat

“I meant," said Ipslore bitterly, "what is there in this world that truly makes living worthwhile?"
Death thought about it.
CATS, he said eventually. CATS ARE NICE.”
Terry Pratchett, Sourcery

“A bone to the dog is not charity. Charity is the bone shared with the dog, when you are just as hungry as the dog.”
Jack London

“The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness.”
Joseph Conrad, Under Western Eyes

“First you're an unknown, then you write one book and you move up to obscurity.”
Martin Meyers
