Fran Hawthorne got sidetracked for three decades writing award-winning nonfiction, including eight books, mainly about consumer activism and business social responsibility. But she's been actually been writing novels since she was in elementary school.

Her newest--HER DAUGHTER--has just been published by Black Rose Writing. Kirkus Review said of it: "A deep dive into the pain of separation and hope for reconciliation conveyed with grace, realism, and empathy."

Fran has also published two other novels, including I MEANT TO TELL YOU (Stephen F. Austin State University Press, November 2022), a finalist for the SARTON AWARD, the ERIC HOFFER BOOK AWARD, the NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARDS (in both contemporary novel and women's fiction), and ot

For instance, I could pop into Kate Atkinson's "Life after Life" and make sure that Ursula Todd actually manages to assassinate Hitler. Then I'd slip into the first half of Jonathan Coe's "Middle England" to nag Sophie, Benjamin, Doug, and the other leftist characters to get off their arses (well, I might as well talk British) and get everyone they know to vote No on Brexit. What happened to the Ann Patchett who wrote the amazing "Commonwealth" (one of my all-time favorites) and the flawed but still intriguing "The Dutch House"?

Now she's sunk into pablum like "Tom Lake" and this newest, "Whistler."

“In this age of consumer activism, pinpoint marketing, and unlimited and immediate information, we want the impossible: products and producers that will assure us that we are fashionable, and that don’t pollute, harm animals, or contain weird chemicals, that run on alternative energy, pay their workers good salaries, recycle their scraps, use natural ingredients, buy from local suppliers, donate generously to charity, donate in particular to their neighborhoods, and don’t throw their weight around by lobbying. (Or maybe they should lobby for the right causes?)”
Fran Hawthorne, Ethical Chic: The Inside Story of the Companies We Think We Love

“People keep secrets for all kinds of reasons. To avoid hurting other people. To protect their jobs. Sometimes I think people just get so used to their public versions of the truth, if they've been doing it for a long time, that they forget the secret they've been hiding.”
