The answer was to generalise the characters e.g. Pirate princess seeks to deliver object from dying white knight, Pirate prince usurps the kingdom and sets it on a course to destruction. By thinking of the story and characters in this very basic one-dimensional way, I was able to step back from the characters and plot the story.

Other ideas: go for a walk / swim. Write something else. (less)
