The Big Idea blog post is up!
It's posted! My "The Big Idea" article for John Scalzi's blog is posted. It's about the Undercity and how I came up with that universe. whatever.scalzi.com/2020/07/09/the-bi...
This blog post is the first time I've written directly about going to an "urban, inner-city" school (though I'm not crazy about those terms, mainly because they come with a lot of negative connotations). I didn't consciously silence myself, I just fast learned that most of my peers in college and beyond couldn't relate to my background. So I didn't talk about it.
I touched on it in my introduction to the 2013 Nebula anthology I edited. I talked about how, when I said I read the "The Invisible Man" in high school, I meant the Ralph Ellison book, not the story by H.G. Wells that most readers of the Nebula anthology would think of first.
Also, the scene where Tina and Althor get attacked in East LA in Lightning Strike, Book I (Catch the Lightning) is based on something that happened to me in high school. But this Big idea is the first time I've gone into any depth about the school or my experiences.
I have to find the art credit for this image I had in my desktop folder. I will update this post as soon as I find it. If anyone knows it's location on the web, please post here.

More online stories
I'm putting up more stories on my Patreon page, some for free and others for subscribers. come on over! You're welcome to read those that are available free of charge, and you're invited to subscribe if you like what you find.
Here is a list:
Echoes of Pride, full story: Free
patreon.com/posts/echoes-of-pride-868...
The Wages of Honor: Free
Part 1 of 3: patreon.com/posts/wages-of-honor-i-82...
Part 2 of 3: patreon.com/posts/wages-of-honor-2-82...
Paywalled, Part 3 of 3:
patreon.com/posts/wages-of-honor-3-83...
The Edges of Never Haven (paywall)
Part I/II: patreon.com/posts/edges-of-never-1-86...
Part II/II: patreon.com/posts/edges-of-never-2-86...
This is a complete rewrite of the the Edges of Never-Haven, making it into science fiction instead of fantasy and setting it more firmly in the Ruby Dynasty universe. It's also better written.
The Shadowed Heart, Part I or II (paywalled)
patreon.com/posts/shadowed-heart-i-87...
I'm also rewriting this one, bringing it more solidly into the Skolian Empire universe (and also because I write better now than when it was published).

Reading and Review of Undercity
Great reading + review of Undercity over at the Bored Goddess reviews. The first half is her excellent reading, followed by her review of the book. She really gets the book. It got five ducks as a rating. 🙂

Writer's workshop for Science Fiction
Hello, all. In a couple of hours, I'm doing a talk on how non-scientists can put science in their SF. You don't need a degree in science! I'll go over various approaches you can use to base ideas in your work on science even if you know nothing about the scientific topic. Come on over!
This is short notice, but if you register for the conference (it's free), they will have videos of all the sessions that you can watch at your leisure.
