I make my living translating modern novels (French, Dutch into English), but my real love is reserved for writing my own brand of fiction. My latest is a historical novel, SLIPPER, which tells the story of Cinderella as if she had been a real-life historical character in the 17th century who meets the original author of the fairy tales, the little-known Charles Perrault. My two books for children won many fans: Isabel of the Whales and the follow-up, Jessaloup's Song . I also read everything I can get my hands on. I live in Western Massachusetts with my husband Peter, my dog Ruby and a few thousand bees.
Oh, and I have a website I hope you'll visit: http://www.Hestervelmans.com.

You'll find that if you persist, the story will eventually take on a life of its own, and take you on a thrilling rollercoaster ride to the inexorable ending. I'd also say that although you're always told to "write what you know", it doesn't mean you shouldn't use your imagination. Sometimes it's necessary to throw away what you know, and indulge in the most outrageous flights of fancy. It's fiction, after all, and fiction gives you the license to invent!(less)

But it took him nearly seven years to find a publisher. I'd almost given up on it when he called out of the blue to say Delacorte wanted to publish it. So yes, it's important to find an agent first, but getting an agent is just the first part of what can be a long and arduous process. My best advice: believe in yourself, and don't give up.(less)

One day to publication day...

My novel Slipper is coming out tomorrow, and I am a bundle of nerves. Will people read it? Will they like it? How will I even know?

It's a big thing, sending something out into the universe that's been your own personal, private fiefdom, gestating inside your head (or computer) for so long. Each word lovingly pondered over, each flimsy character laboriously sculpted into a real person of flesh, blo

“There are too many people who consider themselves far too important. And yet not one of us is anything but a grain of sand in the desert, a speck of dust in the universe.”

“We have all the time in the world. We once complained about being over-scheduled; now we're thrilled to bits if there's something to jot down other than a doctor's appointment.”
