It took me a bit to get into this one, mainly because I'm not one of those people who seem to think that Mary Shelley needs me to defend her from Percy. Was he a trash human? Absolutely. Was he also a talented poet? Absolutely. Did Mary love him? Abs ...more

Felt like a fairy tale, and strongly reminded me of Peter S. Beagle's recent I'm Afraid You've Got Dragons. Charming, humorous without being too silly, and serious when it needed to be, it made me hope that Sachar does more in this vein in the future ...more

“Galen Werner, you may choose one of my daughters to be your bride, and when I die, you shall sit beside her as co-ruler of Westfallin."
"Your Majesty.... I - I don't know - "
Rose felt her knees shaking. Did he not love her after all?
"Psst, Galen?" Pansy tugged on his arm. Galen leaned down. "If Rose doesn't want you," the little girl whispered loudly, "you can marry me."
Galen laughed shakily. "Thanks, Pansy."
"Oh, Rose! Don't just stand there like a lump," Poppy said, poking her in the back. "If he's too embarrased, you should be the one to say something."
"Poppy!" Daisy looked scandalized. "It's not Rose's place to - "
Under cover of their squabbling, Rose took Galen's hand and moved closer to him. "Do you want to marry me?" she whispered in a much quieter tone than Pansy had used.
"Yes," he said.
"If neither of you is going to speak up," King Gregor said, "I shall simply have to decide it for myself!"
"Father," Rose protested, "that won't be necessary!"
"I choose Rose," Galen blurted out at the same time.
"There. Done. Easy." King Gregor clapped his hands.”

“It looks as though your shop is doing well," Luka said gazing around, "Could you help me find a gift for a lady friend of mine?"
My heart plunged to my grenn satin slippers, and I had to stare down at Azarte for a minute, petting him hard. Naturally Luka had a "lady friend." She was probably nobly born: the daughter of a count or a duke. I imagined her having thick dark hair and clear skin, and was bitterly jealous. "Of course," I stammered after a time. "What would she like? A gown? A sash?" If she came in for a fitting, I decided to "accidentlly" poke her with every pin.”

It's last day of January (where I am at least) and so it's time to chose the next book of the month! Gather around folks and cast your vote. Also, going along with the spirit of the club, I added twelve books for this month in honor of the 12 dancing princesses. Have fun everyone.

“Claim whatever you want. Say you only want a happy family or a successful career or a big house. I say: no, that's not what you want. You'll settle for those things, but you really want a monkey that does your evil bidding. Pullman is a genius just for this.”

“For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.”

Since I know you're into knitting (and dragons, of course!) thought I'd just point you to a super awesome knitting book that my mom and I own: KNITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD by Nicky Epstein. It has a pattern for an amigurumi dragon (the reason we bought it in the first place) that I'm working on--So cool! There's also a ton of super cute clothing items in there.

I think your books are epic, and I can't wait for the next ones to come out!

P.S.-- Come to San Diego some time! I would happily drag my friends and family over to you!

1. Today I went to my library to look at the books I was on hold for... the book next to mine was your new Princess of Glass. It made me sad that I couldn't read it until after the 65th person reads it (It's on hold and I'm 66th in line...) until I get to magically take it off that shelf and take it home with me. Oh well, a few more weeks!
2. I have a maltese mix, and her name is Sadie. I think Pippin and her would be friends.
3. My last dog was a Brittany Spaniel- she lived only a 1 1/2 years, due to cancer. :( But, I wanted to let you know that I love that breed, and they make a wonderful pet :)
