Grandpa update

Long-time readers of this blog may remember that I wrote a post about ancestors, including my Grandpa, Harold James Aburrow, 1903 – 1993, who was a conscientious objector.

I just found a newspaper article with some details of his conscientious objection tribunal.

My other Grandpa, Felix Maurice Rose (1909 – 1992) was also a conscientious objector.

I am very proud of them both for being conscientious

I finally got around to reading this book. Super interesting. The edition I read was updated in 1985/6.

So it’s about the Pagan movement before the internet. It’s interesting to see which individuals and organizations have since been revealed to be p

Quotes by Yvonne Aburrow  (?)
Quotes are added by the Goodreads community and are not verified by Goodreads. (Learn more)

“The patriarchal/kyriarchal/hegemonic culture seeks to regulate and control the body – especially women’s bodies, and especially black women’s bodies – because women, especially black women, are constructed as the Other, the site of resistance to the kyriarchy. Because our existence provokes fear of the Other, fear of wildness, fear of sexuality, fear of letting go – our bodies and our hair (traditionally hair is a source of magical power) must be controlled, groomed, reduced, covered, suppressed.”
Yvonne Aburrow

“I believe that the reason religions seek to control, limit, and even prevent sexual pleasure is because it is an independent means of accessing spiritual states such as a sense of oneness with the universe. They also fear the independence that these experiences bring because they give people direct access to the Divine. They fear women’s sexuality because it is held to be polymorphous and wild. Women are associated with the body, sometimes referred to as “the flesh.” This was the result of an ascetic and world-denying approach to spirituality and religion that arose in the early part of the Axial Age (the era when individual prophets founded several new religions).”
Yvonne Aburrow, Changing Paths

“Paganism is more of an attitude of mind than a fixed creed. It is always tempting to ask, “what do Pagans believe?” but a better question is “what do Pagans do?”
Yvonne Aburrow

“Let my worship be within the heart that rejoices,
for behold, all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals.
Therefore, let there be beauty and strength,
power and compassion, honor and humility,
mirth and reverence within you.”
Doreen Valiente, Charge of the Goddess

“Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there's no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic.”
Laini Taylor, Daughter of Smoke & Bone

“A book, too, can be a star, a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe.”
Madeleine L'Engle

“you have to be careful with the stories you tell. And you have to watch out for the stories that you are told.”
Thomas King, The Truth About Stories: A Native Narrative

“Or, if you want the positive but somewhat callous view, you might wish to describe Christianity as the gateway drug to supply-side capitalism”
Thomas King, The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America
