Hi Halls,

The Academie was born of a tiny piece of information I discovered quite by accident, that Eliza Monroe, Hortense de Beauharnais, and Caroline Bonaparte all attended the same French boarding school. And that period, when Napoleon was on his way to becoming emperor but not quite, always fascinated me. I wanted to write a story about how being in such a volatile time and place, with such strong characters, might shape a young girl's view of life.

How Hard Can It Be to Write a Dual-Timeline Novel?

If you’re on my email list or following me on social media, you’ve already heard me going on about dual-timeline novels, about how much I love to read them and marvel at the skill it takes to write one.

Where is all this coming from? I think two places:

1. Discovering Susanna Kearsley’s novels, and

2. Finding out that Kate Morton has a new novel out (which I possess in a beautiful hardcover).
