Una delle problematiche più frequentate (in modo più o meno esplicito) dell’opera di Cancogni è la Verità. E se da un lato Cancogni lavora su un giornalismo pungente, impegnato e controcorrente; dall’altro l’attività di scrittore diviene un’immersione nella storia dell’Italia del Novecento.

Del Cancogni giornalista, fece scalpore un articolo del 1945 in cui perorò la causa di un apprendimento basato sulla memoria e sul nozionismo. Da ricordare anche l’inchiesta svolta nel 1956 per un caso di rapporti troppo stretti tra Vaticano ed affari[3].
