I think my favorite is the couple in Nikolai Gogol's story "Old-World Landowners," Afanasy Ivanovich and Pulkheria Ivanovna. Although their existence has hints of the absurd--their chief delight is food, and Pulkheria Ivanova continually tantalizes her husband with delicious appetizers--this may be the most tender relationship in all of Gogol's work. It's as real and poignant as it is silly. Even their names are poignant: Afanasy derives from Athanasius, "immortal," and "Pulcheria" from the Latin "pulcher," "beautiful." As it turns out, their relationship is neither immortal nor (entirely) beautiful; there are hints all along of death and rupture. They can survive only in an enclosed world; their own world, for all its seclusion, is not and cannot be fully enclosed.(less)

Birthday gallery

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes! It has been an exceptional day; it started yesterday evening, with my trip to Budaörs to see the dress rehearsal of Julius Caesar at the Budaörsi Latinovits Színház. Before the play, I climbed up the Kő-hegy (“Stone Hill”), something I have wanted to do for a long time. […]
