When I was a kid, I prowled the library to check out the thickest, heaviest books I could find. Two Years Before the Mast. The Wandering Jew. Quo Vadis. Books I could fall into and pretend I lived in the past. Places I dreamed of visiting some day. As a teen, I discovered my grandmother's 5-volume sets of Hemingway, the short stories of Poe and de Maupassant. I began writing poetry and short stories then.

Sometimes it seemed that my family moved every time the rent was due. I attended some 13 high schools on the West coast of the US and daydreamed of attending college. I balanced working full time with taking classes; it took ten years to earn my degree, with odd jobs and careers in international banking and corporate consulting along the w

Blonde and charismatic, she was a Hollywood starlet in the decade of the 1940's with walk-on parts and a career that never took off. In the 1950's, she married a steelworker and sold newspaper ads in Seattle during the recession, but she was never a suburban housewife. Sometimes I think I will write down what little I know. The mystery? How my sister and I somehow survived those alcohol-fueled years.(less)

How good to hear from you! As far as I know, the Hearth is no longer active. I also have slowed down but remain commmitted to writing and blogging. Luckily, we are in the earlier stages of Parkinson's. I've found a few resources and appreciate your note of support. Each day is a little better, yes? Not sure how we might stay in touch, but if you like, e-mail me now and then. I'll always reply! Hope all is well with you. Beth

Oct IWSG: My favorite book . . . and a gift for you!

IWSG October 1 question - What is the most favorite thing you have written, published or not? And why?I still remember working my way through college, sitting in a class of 60 students, excited to begin. I was the only woman. The professor scanned the class and stopped, pointing at me. "Why are you here, taking the opportunity to learn away from a man who will be the head of a household?"I was

“We do not know if the stranger at the gate will bring good or evil. We do know we cannot step away from suffering. We face hard decisions that will bring tears to our eyes, but we know in our hearts what is right and what is fair. Winter comes. Listen to your heart, meditate on God’s word, and trust in God’s mercy. For that comes to us from no stranger.”

“I miss the days when I was alone with my characters and no one else knew them except me.”
Lian Hearn

Natalie Goldberg, Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within

“At lunchtime I bought a huge orange
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave—
They got quarters and I had a half.

And that orange it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park
This is peace and contentment. It's new.

The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all my jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I'm glad I exist.”
Wendy Cope, Serious Concerns

“The day he moved out was terrible –
That evening she went through hell.
His absence wasn’t a problem
But the corkscrew had gone as well.”
Wendy Cope, Serious Concerns

“Make New Year's goals. Dig within, and discover what you would like to have happen in your life this year. This helps you do your part. It is an affirmation that you're interested in fully living life in the year to come.

Goals give us direction. They put a powerful force into play on a universal, conscious, and subconscious level. Goals give our life direction.

What would you like to have happen in your life this year? What would you like to do, to accomplish? What good would you like to attract into your life? What particular areas of growth would you like to have happen to you? What blocks, or character defects, would you like to have removed?

What would you like to attain? Little things and big things? Where would you like to go? What would you like to have happen in friendship and love? What would you like to have happen in your family life?

What problems would you like to see solved? What decisions would you like to make? What would you like to happen in your career?

Write it down. Take a piece of paper, a few hours of your time, and write it all down - as an affirmation of you, your life, and your ability to choose. Then let it go.

The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.”
Melody Beattie, The Language of Letting Go: Daily Meditations on Codependency
