There are lots of better words for it: fatigue, procrastination, laziness ... true writer's block, by my definition and my definition only, is a complete barrier separating you from telling your story. You can write hundreds of pages and tens of drafts - but you can't solve your problem. Maybe it's because you don't have the right main character, or the right ending, or maybe one of your characters is keeping a secret from you. Maybe it's all three - that was my unfortunate lot once. The way I deal with it is the last thing any writer wants to hear - I stopped writing. I put the story on the shelf for a year or two. Then, slowly, in the background of my mind, my subconscious would work on it, solving each problem and thinking of new characters. When it sounded like it got a good idea, I'd jot it down - but I wouldn't start writing on it until it was something I wanted to read. (less)

Caleb Brabham shared a quote
“As long as there is one upright man, as long as there is one compassionate woman, the contagion may spread and the scene is not desolate. Hope is the thing that is left to us in a bad time. I shall get up Sunday morning and wind the clock, as a contribution to order and steadfastness.
Sailors have an expression about the weather: they say, the weather is a great bluffer. I guess the same is true of our human society — things can look dark, then a break shows in the clouds, and all is changed, sometimes rather suddenly. It is quite obvious that the human race has made a queer mess of life on this planet. But as a people we probably harbor seeds of goodness that have lain for a long time waiting to sprout when the conditions are right. Man’s curiosity, his relentlessness, his inventiveness, his ingenuity have led him into deep trouble. We can only hope that these same traits will enable him to claw his way out.
Hang on to your hat. Hang on to your hope. And wind the clock, for tomorrow is

"This was my son's favourite book. He was forever putting skirts of mine over his head and filling a basket with dirty laundry wandering around the house (with his father aiding and abetting him) saying he was Toad the washerwoman.

"Trying to review The Wind in the Willows is a strange undertaking. In the introduction to my copy, A. A. Milne wrote:

"One can argue over the merits of most books... one does not argue about The Wind in the Willows. The young man gives it to the girl " Read more of this review »

“You expect the process of writing to be like architecture; you lay your foundation and you build your walls around it. But when I write, I find it to be more akin to archeology. It’s as if the book is out there written somewhere and I am just slowly uncovering it, even if it's just one speck of dust at a time.”

Arthur Conan Doyle
“What is the meaning of it, Watson? said Holmes solemnly as he laid down the paper. "What object is served by this circle of misery and violence and fear? It must tend to some end, or else our universe is ruled by chance, which is unthinkable. But what end? There is the great standing perennial problem to which human reason is as far from an answer as ever.”
