Story republished in new Chicken Soup for the Soul Book!
Exciting news! My story “Tang's Christmas Miracle”, first published in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Christmas in Canada (2014) has been included in a new book called Chicken Soup for the Soul: Me and My Dog.
Tang touched the world with his happy bark. He made crying babies laugh. And cranky old men smile. At the OVC hospital, waiting to have his stitches removed post-cancer surgery, he managed to make all those worried pet parents, who caught his eye in the reception area, crack a smile. Even now, beyond the grave and ten years after the original publication of “Tang’s Christmas Miracle”, he is helping others.
Release date for Chicken Soup for the Soul: Me and My Dog is February 6. It will be featured at Walmart, Barnes & Noble and other booksellers including Shoppers Drug Mart and Chapters/Indigo in Canada. And, of course, Amazon.
Royalties go to American Humane to support animal welfare.
Tang will probably be remembered long after I am forgotten. I believe my little dude up there in doggie heaven has got his wings!

Twilight over the Aegean
Luke, Lucy and Norman return in my latest release, TWILIGHT OVER THE AEGEAN! Ambition and rivalry pits an unexpected enemy against the archaeology team over the discovery of one more mysterious object.
What is it this time?
Recently I was asked by Mystery and Suspense Magazine to write an article about mysterious objects in romantic mysteries. All of my stories in the Fresco Nights saga have one. The Black Madonna in FRESCO NIGHTS, The Medusa fresco in POMPEII AT DUSK, the Winged Bulls of Nineveh in MIDNIGHT IN PALMYRA and BAGHDAD BEFORE DAWN, and the Screaming Mummy in CAIRO BY NIGHTFALL. In TWILIGHT OVER THE AEGEAN the mysterious object is an ancient statue of Helen of Troy that leads to double murder!
Mysterious objects often show up in romantic mysteries because people are naturally curious about strange things. Characters can be mysterious too. Lucy and Luke read like open books. This makes Luke the billionaire archaeologist, charismatic; while museum illustrator Lucy wears her emotions on her sleeve. But Norman, Luke’s French bodyguard, is an enigma whose secrets from book to book are ever-evolving.
Mystery surrounds all ancient objects and these objects not only deliver the main characters into exotic new worlds, but is the reason people join forces.
Which brings me to the reason for this post. Good news for followers of the Fresco Nights saga! Yes, there is a book 6! Lucy’s boss is accused of stealing a statue of Helen of Troy, and her arrest leads to the secrets of an American ambassador, putting Lucy’s wedding on hold and her life in deadly chaos. TWILIGHT OVER THE AEGEAN is available at all Amazon outlets. Kindle copies will be given away during a free promotion for 5 days starting August 28th. Enjoy, and thank you for reading! Your comments, reviews and ratings are always appreciated.

Book 5 of the FRESCO NIGHTS saga
An awesome coincidence was brought to my attention last week as I was getting ready to release my new novel, the fifth installment of the Fresco Nights saga. It’s called CAIRO BY NIGHTFALL. Here is the opening scene:
CHAPTER 1
“Do not scream when you see the mummy.”
What on earth could that possibly mean? The message was cryptic. I read it again for clarification but the second reading made no more sense than the first.
My eyeballs slowly slanted skyward, away from the text and the cellphone in my hand. My vision moved sideways to the banner on the left side of the museum’s heritage entrance. In large red letters shadowed in black, one word in bold uppercase had been printed vertically down the cloth banner that now snapped in the gusting breeze. The material of the banner was weatherproof Sports Mesh, and resisted tearing. An answering flap came from high above the other side of the triple revolving glass doors. This was its twin, another banner, lettered identically. Below the metal grommets that fastened the banners to studs on the outside walls the word ran like an accusation:
M
U
M
M
Y!
The message was a warning, but a warning against what? The museum was advertising a special exhibition. So what? The curatorial staff was busily making preparations for opening day. This was normal.
A planeload of Egyptian artifacts had arrived from Cairo last week along with one of their curators. This shipment included the body of Prince Pentawere, the homicidal son of Pharaoh Ramses III.
Wow, did that bring back memories! Memories long forgotten. I had seen more than a couple of mummies in my profession. In fact, my career in museum illustration had begun with a mummy. So—why would I scream at the sight of one?
My cellphone dinged. Aras had not waited for me to respond before a follow-up text appeared.
“Tell no one that we’ve been in touch. It’s essential that no one know. It is a matter of national security.”
I frowned. Tell no one? Not even Luke? Why was Aras even texting me instead of Luke? I am just a friend. Well, maybe more than a friend. I like to take credit for reuniting the estranged brothers. But why trust me and not Luke?
I sat on the limestone steps of the heritage entrance to the Royal Ontario Museum, dressed in designer jeans and lightweight wool sweater beneath a navy blue blazer, basking in the late autumn sunshine, feeling guilty as hell. It was strange. Aras and I were hardly besties, although I liked to think we were friends. I know the billionaire archaeologist, on occasion, still had doubts when it came to his younger sibling. But Aras had shown me the strength of his character more times than I could count.
A grey dialogue balloon immediately followed the message on my screen. “NOT even Luke.”
It was like he had read my mind.
“What about Norman? I have to tell Norman. We don’t have secrets from each other.” I clicked send. My own dialogue balloon, in green, appeared.
“A matter of NATIONAL SECURITY, Lucy.”
So last week my husband came up to me cellphone in hand and said, “Did you know about this?”
He flashed an image in my face, https://www.rom.on.ca/en/exhibitions-...
It was an ad for a mummy exhibit that was opening at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) September 19, this month.
NO, I did not know that the ROM was going to have a mummy exhibit in the same month that I planned to release my book! I wrote that novel over a year ago. An amazing coincidence!
Two chances to win a free Kindle copy of CAIRO BY NIGHTFALL: Amazon Kindle ebook free promotion starts on September 22 and ends on September 26.
Goodreads Giveaway starts accepting requests on September 24 and ends October 15.

POMPEII AT DUSK: Giveaway for FRESCO NIGHTS sequel
Thanks to all who have or are reading FRESCO NIGHTS, the debut volume to my new series the Fresco Nights Saga. This series is written under the name of Deborah L. Cannon. I am so pleased that Goodreads members have added it to their to-read shelves. If you haven’t yet read book one, please do, because book two, POMPEII AT DUSK, has just been released!
Lucy Racine and her archaeology dream team return in the sequel to FRESCO NIGHTS. Billionaire Luke Trevanian and his mysterious but oh-so-sexy bodyguard have secrets. But they’re no match for Lucy. Lucy Racine is Girl Power—a double scoop of romance, finger-chilling suspense and a mind-tickle of a mystery. Charismatic archaeologist Luke Trevanian, museum illustrator Lucy Racine and French bodyguard Norman Depardieu have a broken, but priceless sculpture to save, an innocent but confused woman to rescue—and a smuggling racket to crack. And you won’t believe who is at the head of it. In the quaint Italian hilltop village of Bagnoregio no one speaks of the recent plane crash into the cliffside where Luke’s ex-wife and her valuable cargo go missing…
I am doing a Goodreads Giveaway for POMPEII AT DUSK from April 28 to May 28. There are 100 Kindle copies to giveaway so don’t forget to enter. Good Luck!

New Release: FRESCO NIGHTS
It’s hard to say why or how an author decides to write what she writes. My new book FRESCO NIGHTS came to me as I was mulling over the whole idea of dipping my toes into romantic suspense. Two characters appeared to me: a billionaire archaeologist and his bodyguard. These two guys aren’t based on any men I know. But after bringing them to life I wouldn’t mind knowing two men like them at all. Did I just say these male characters aren’t based on anyone I know? Well, maybe that’s not exactly true. Maybe they’re a compilation of men I have known. And loved.
Except for the billionaire part. I have never met a billionaire. No less dated one. Smart, kind and sexy, with sensitive eyes and a great sense of humor, that is Luke Trevanian and Norman Depardieu. Who wouldn’t want some of that? One is outgoing, athletic and charismatic, the definition of charm. He’s the billionaire. And an archaeologist to boot (Indiana Jones move over!) The other is enigmatic, very physical with muscles like iron, and a heart of gold. The bodyguard.
Enter Lucy Racine, museum illustrator. She’s a regular girl. She works for a big city museum in Toronto and dreams about adventure but never has any. Her life is pretty quiet and routine. So, what does she have that these two guys could possibly want?
My next challenge was to combine my love of suspense with romance and come up with a story that combined all of the things that interested me. I know. Big challenge because too many interests can be equally confusing. But I love archaeology. I love travelling to exotic places. And I recently became interested in the world of illicit antiquities trafficking. I wanted to include these things, too.
I was reading Archaeology Magazine one day, and saw an article about a catholic church in Positano that had ruins beneath it. There were frescos from a Roman villa buried by the same volcano that buried Pompeii. So I came up with a plot that would take me to the Amalfi Coast in Italy. I looked the place up on the Internet. And when I saw a photograph of a beautiful ancient castle keep that was renovated into a boutique hotel I knew I had the scene of my climax.
I hope this book sounds interesting to some of you. Right now you have a chance to win a free ebook copy from Goodreads! Giveaway dates run from Feb 14 - Mar 14. https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sh...

Chicken Soup for the Soul Celebrates Canada's 150th and I am a Contributor!
So, good news! My story “Our Yard, A Canadian Tale” has been selected for the upcoming release, Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Spirit of Canada. This is a special volume to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday! I am so happy, because this story is about my father’s little known life as a young artist in Saskatchewan and how, as the son of an immigrant he rose to prominence as a teenaged artist in the, then, small town of Regina. I remember being in my twenties and going through his old artworks in a trunk in the attic of our house with him, and his saying to me, “Well, maybe when I’m gone, I’ll be discovered again.” He is gone now and I’m pleased that a new generation will know of his legacy. The title of my story is drawn from one of his paintings called “Our Yard,” which was mentioned in the Regina Leader-Post. He was one of 11 artists chosen out of 78 for a provincial show, when he was 14 years old. I do wonder whatever happened to that painting…. I assume it was sold as I never saw it among his things.Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Spirit of Canada: 101 Stories about What Makes Canada Great

Historical Novels Society Review of THE PIRATE EMPRESS
My latest release, THE PIRATE EMPRESS, is set during the Ming Dynasty and follows the fascinating trajectory of the building and defence of the Great Wall, and the evolution of the vast pirate consortia that terrorized imperial waters at the time. The story came to me because of a trip I took to China where I walked the Great Wall, glimpsed the Ming tombs on the misty horizon, and explored the excavated armies of First Emperor Qin—all of which brought to life for me the heroic age of Chinese myth and empire. Most epic fantasies are derived form Northern European mythologies, but I thought I would try my hand at a big story that took place in ancient China, and that drew from Chinese myths. So far the professional reviews I have received have been wonderful! Here is the latest, a lovely review, from the Historical Novels Society:
“'Women do not inherit anything but misery in China,' is the caustic sentiment expressed to a Ming princess named Li in Deborah Cannon’s sprawling historical-fantasy epic The Pirate Empress.
Li finds herself in the center of a vast and very tangled web of palace intrigue, imperial politics, and of course plenty of derring-do on the ocean, as she’s forced into marriage with a brutal sea captain in order to further her quest to save her kidnapped son, who has been prophesied to become an emperor, a future Son of Heaven.
Complicated forces are aligning against that destiny, and hovering over friend and foe alike is the supernatural Fox Faerie, who seeks the destruction of all mankind. Readers who might remember Barry Hughart’s wonderful fantasy novels set 'in an ancient China that never was' will take to Cannon’s fast-paced and wonderfully written tale, which mingles supernatural beings with well-researched flesh-and-blood characters and historical details from the Ming Dynasty.
The characters sparkle with life, and their dialogue crackles—this is an intensely readable and well-done work of fantasy-infused historical fiction. Strongly recommended". – Fiona Ness, (Historical Novels Society)

Midwest Book Review now in!
I am so pleased to have received this awesome book review from MBR Bookwatch, Midwest Book Review.
"The Pirate Empress is a blend of historical novel and Asian fantasy epic, set during the era when the Ming Dynasty ruled China. The protagonist Li is a palace runaway, prophesied to bear China's greatest Son of Heaven. Both the Emperor and a Mongol warlord are out to destroy her, and thwart the prophecy that will unseat them from power. War engulfs the Wall, pirates terrorize the south coast, and Li's young son is kidnapped. Her soldier lover and warlock grandfather are unable to aid her in her quest to save her son. At the mercy of the pirates, she is forced into marriage to a cruel admiral, and must learn how to survive the cruelty of man and sea alike. To rescue her son, she must not only navigate horrific perils, but also find a way to fight back against the corrosive Fox Faerie, whose corruptive magic threatens to eradicate human civilization. The Pirate Empress is a sweeping odyssey, captivating from cover to cover." - Mary Cowper, Midwest Book Review
The Pirate Empress
This was a big book, 816 pages, so I am impressed that they took little over a month to read and review the book. This review site, while open to both traditionally published and self-published authors, is very supportive of independent authors.
