One thing I have found is that by now, I know my characters so well that sometimes I can just point them at a scene and it writes itself. Every now and again, that throws up something even I wasn't expecting, which is odd but very satisfying.(less)

The best thing that anyone can do is to write as much as possible. I encounter people who expect the first thing they produce to be of Booker-winning quality, and when it isn't, it puts them off. It shouldn't. Everyone needs to practise. The other thing is to get people reading your stuff. You'll need a thick skin, because criticism can be tough, but it is good to take on board readers' feedback. It helps to develop you as a writer.(less)
