To take your last question first, the novel is a story about masks, real and metaphoric. I've always loved masks as an artform and find them scary, the way a mask's expression doesn't change. Some days, when something lousy has happened in my life, I go to work all day and no one has any idea what is going under the surface. This strikes me as both sad and courageous. We all put on our game faces and carry on.
Anna was dancing for Thomas. In that moment, she felt powerful, someone to be worshipped, felt but not understood.
As for Hugo and Lola, it was a love affair that Hugo had no business being part of, but he could not help himself. Lola was hoping to escape a bad situation. In the end, Hugo does the right thing and returns to his wife.

Hope this answers your good questions! Please recommend the novel to friends if you enjoyed it!
All best,

“Though the little voices cautioned it was time to settle, settle in, settle for, settle down, I muzzled these mutterings. One more love affair before marriage. One more trip before stagnation. One more adventure before I turn in my car keys and close the front door.”
Lili Wright

“She wore black, the color of nuns and witches, the color of the loneliest corners of outer space, where gravity prevents all light from escaping, the name given to boxes tucked into airplanes, the ones that explain the disaster.”
Lili Wright, Dancing with the Tiger

“At the red light, I looked around. Some guy in the next car had his window down and was giving me the once-over. Sometimes I get embarrassed when people catch me singing, particularly when I'm crying at the same time. But today, here, in the first moments of my New Beginning, I didn't give a shit. ”
Lili Wright, Learning to Float: The Journey of a Woman, a Dog, and Just Enough Men
