I grew up in a small Ohio town, but decided while studying the states and their capitals in the fourth grade that I would one day live in Maryland. I really liked the flag. Maryland has been my home for almost thirty years.

The first story I ever wrote was about a discarded vacuum cleaner that makes its way back home. When I later saw the movie, The Brave Little Toaster, I was flabbergasted. They stole my idea!

In high school I worked in the shop rack of my father’s Pontiac dealership where I ran parts and prepped new cars. In my leisure time, I learned to play a pretty mean front man on a foosball table.

I majored in Social Work in both graduate and undergraduate school with concentrations in criminology and family therapy. I have spent my ca

When I think about plot for a mystery, I like to look at before/after, such as who you are before an event happens, and how everything is different after. There are some wonderful books and movies based on this theme. For my protagonist, Rosalie Hart, the timing of the end of her marriage and her move to the Eastern Shore of Maryland was a huge turning point in her life. Finding a dead body changed her direction. Everything was different after that. For me, the timing of certain events in my life changed my direction as well. Such as when I met my husband. All of a sudden I was on a different path. The mystery is in the timing. If our paths had crossed at a different time in our lives, we never would have come together. Mystery makes life more interesting -- in fiction and in our own lives.(less)

View From the North Rim

Ribbons of color: terra cotta, sienna, amber, and a red I never knew existed in nature, stretch before us like the layers of a cake that has baked unevenly.
“See the vein of pink granite?” my mother asks as she points toward the opposite wall of the Grand Canyon. ”The layer below it is 1.4 billion years older.”
The setting sun reflects a dazzling light from the rainbow of rock. I squint, trying to Read more of this blog post »

“Why apologize? Emotions are what they are. And they exist for a reason. It's what you do with them that matters. Most importantly, don't let them take over. They are just one part of you”
Wendy Sand Eckel, Mystery at Windswept Farm

“She said kisses should be lovely. If they are forced or messy, you should find another boyfriend”
Wendy Sand Eckel, Mystery at Windswept Farm

“The kitchen glowed in the early morning light as I fired up my adored coffee maker, Mr. Miele, and watched as he hissed out a cup of Columbian roast. Although he was showing his age, Mr. Miele had been my first and only improvement when i moved into this drafty, old farm house. I liked to think those initial espressos helped restore my will to carry on, and, not long after, bring Barclay Meadow back to life”
