I'm a children's book illustrator who branched out into writing art-based fantasy-mystery novels for children and young people. My first illustrated novel, THE BLACKHOPE ENIGMA (Templar Publishing UK, 2010; Candlewick, 2011) was shortlisted for a number of UK children's book awards and was a Junior Library Guild Selection in the USA. The sequel, THE CRIMSON SHARD (Templar UK, 2011 and Candlewick, 2012) was a Junior Library Guild Selection for Fall 2012. THE SHADOW LANTERN, the final book in the Blackhope Enigma trilogy, was published in the UK in 2013 and in the USA in 2014.

My latest novel, JET BLACK HEART, a supernatural time travel story for teens, is published by Barrington Stoke in the UK. Barrington Stoke also published my story for yo

When I moved to Yorkshire in England, I was really excited to visit the moors and the sea coast with its rocky cliffs and sea caves. I love how you can go beach combing and find fossils and pieces of jet that are millions of years ago. The area is so atmospheric, I knew it would be a great place to set a spooky story. I'm sure it won't be the last time I write a story about this part of the world!(less)

I speak to large groups of pupils and the more I do this, the more I realise how important it is to inspire young people to realise their dreams. It's a privilege to be able to tell them about my (sometimes bumpy) road to becoming an artist and writer and to hear about their aspirations. But probably the best feeling of all is when I hear that my visit inspired a reluctant reader to pick up a book. This makes me incredibly happy!(less)

Summer Highlights: Orcas

And now for the most beautiful and terrifying highlight of my summer: watching orcas at close quarters in the Straits of Gibraltar. When the bluefin tuna run from the Atlantic Ocean into the Mediterranean Sea, the orcas are waiting like hitmen to pick them off for dinner. We took an astonishing three hour boat trip with a Swiss marine charity and watched as the orcas battled fishermen in small boa

“Would it surprise you to know that a presence was on your back a few seconds ago?”
Teresa Flavin, The Shadow Lantern

“That’s where they found the skeletons. Right where you’re standing.”
Teresa Flavin, The Blackhope Enigma

“The riders, clad in crimson and black, stopped to scan the maze. Blaise shrank into the hedge, but one keen-eyed hunter spied him. He raised his crossbow, took careful aim and fired.”
Teresa Flavin, The Blackhope Enigma

“E.L. Doctorow said once said that 'Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.' You don't have to see where you're going, you don't have to see your destination or everything you will pass along the way. You just have to see two or three feet ahead of you. This is right up there with the best advice on writing, or life, I have ever heard.”
Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

“The momentary darkness gave way to scores of small glowing lights. Blaise stepped into a candlelit room filled with people and furniture.
'Where are we?" he asked Livia. "How can a whole other room be here? There were only two rooms on the top floor.”
Teresa Flavin, The Crimson Shard

“Somehow the painted door now stood open. Blaise was following Livia through it, past Throgmorton's outstretched arm. Sunni shed her slippers and hurried after them, still not quite believing they were walking through what she had thought was only paint on a wall.”
Teresa Flavin, The Crimson Shard

“Blaise decided that the thing he would remember most about this London was the sour stink of it. The overripe foulness of the streets made him gag, and when a woman emptied a chamber pot from a top window, nearly catching him in its spray, he bent over and wretched, much to the Nightsneaks' amusement.”
Teresa Flavin, The Crimson Shard

“The hedges and driveways were black and silent, but he imagined the silhouette of a jacket hood could move into view at any time, skimming past the light of a window like a shark's fin.”
Teresa Flavin, The Shadow Lantern
