Bestselling British Horror Author Wesley Thomas

Wesley Thomas, a renowned British horror author, made his mark in the horror fiction world in 2011 with his debut novel. Since then, he has penned several bestselling collections, novels, and novellas. With over two decades of passion for all things horror, Wesley's transition into horror fiction was a natural choice.

His work has been featured in various anthologies, websites, national and local newspapers, and has even been read live on radio. Wesley's dedication to the genre is evident in his regular consumption of horror literature, movies, TV shows, and his attendance at horror-themed events worldwide.

Your fingers are twitching to type, and brain is ready and willing to visualize the words you write. But there is just one problem, you don't have any inspiration. You have motivation, which is half the battle, but you don't have any ideas that you feel are fresh, new, innovative, and that will break new ground.
I am very fortunate that this rarely happens to me as I surround myself in culture, I soak up my atmosphere, and binge on as many books, movies, and documentaries that I have time for. I am passing on my helpful tips to aid writers in their search for inspiration.

So firstly, depending on what genre you write in, watch movies of that same genre. I write horror fiction, so every night, or at the very least, every other night, I watch a horror movie, or a series. These feature characters, situations, ideas, concepts, events, plot twists. All of which can make ideas explode in your mind. You may take a tiny segment from something you have watched that sprouts a concept that really has nothing to do with its origin when it's finished.

The more obvious one is read what you write. I was appalled to read an online blog this year that states only 45% of writers, read in their own genre. This is staggering, you need to read inside your genre, it helps you grow as a writer, learn from their mistakes, and learn from their achievements. Also, to keep an eye on the competition and what is current, what people are reading in your genre, and what authors are writing. You don't want two of the same novel!

Other exercises are listening to music. Go away, sit or lay down, and put on some music. Any type, but I find trance music has a profound effect on us and lets our creativity flow. I have produced many ideas from this activity.

Next we have to go for a walk, or run. Great exercise, but it also is good for mental health, as well as giving your brain a rest. This means that ideas are likely to randomly pop into your head. Don't focus on conceiving an idea, concentrate on running, and be careful near the roads! And the human mind will start to wander. OR even better, something you see may trigger a potential book, so be aware of your surroundings people!

One of my favourites is to just take a break. Get away from your computer, give your body and mind a rest, and just lay down, or sit outside in the sun, and these are the times when you are blessed with book concepts.

Need more? Okay. Try scrolling through pins on Pinterest, that is also excellent. Read documentaries, check out newspapers, go to local art galleries and let the artwork pull out your creative nature, and so on.

One thing I must say is don't be discouraged that all you are doing is copying or mimicking, and well.... you can't as that is copyright. But.... an interesting article or picture could transpire to something completely different than the stimuli by which it came from.

Stay positive, think outside the box!

'Waxy Nightmares' A Short Horror Story

“I can’t wait for this!” Sady cheered, beyond stoked.
“It’s gonna be awesome!” Toby responded with an equal measure of enthusiasm.        Their rusty coral pickup truck chuttered along the road, tossing crumbling asphalt into the air, landing into the utter desolation encompassing them.         The surroundings didn’t provide much in way of filling the twelve-hour journey. They relied o Read more of this blog post »
