11/16/2012: I'm currently about 25% the way through with this book and I don't know what's wrong with me. I actually find it ... slightly boring? God, another written-in-tandem book where perspective switches nearly every paragraph so that every event is double the length it should be. I joked last night to Emma that Special Forces is a 200 page novel with 300 pages of author's notes and ... yeah ... that's really what it feels like. Every scene Dan and Vadim share is like... so Dan does this... and this is what Vadim thinks about that, then Vadim does this... and here's Dan's reaction. All those words add up into big bulky padding of nothing standing in between the many interesting/awesome moments so far. The fact that there are awesome moments is why this isn't a DNF, but I'm slowly losing my patience with the pace of this.

(Here's an idea, authors ... If you absolutely CANNOT bare to let someone else control your character, write the first draft in tandem, then go back and do your second drafts separately entirely in your character's POV using the first draft as a guide. Whoever has the more interesting scene wins it.)

It would be one thing if the slower pace meant more believable character development, but it really doesn't and I think that's the biggest problem I'm having here. The combination of tandem, size and unbelievable characters. The brutality of this book is fun (yeah ... I'm that sort of girl) but it feels very shallow and superficial because I don't feel the humanity through the brutality. The only time Vadim worked for me as a character was when he was shooting up a village of women and children because his friend/threesome partner died. But otherwise I'm kind of bored by Vadim and Dan's casual tacked on callousness.

I keep comparing Vadim to Moscow in Sniper ... I feel like that's how this character is supposed to come off, but what made me adore Moscow was that his brutality and cruelty were connected to something very human and inherently charming and interesting. Second in command of a unit widely considered the shit of the Russian army, regularly sent on suicide missions, no food, no sleep, no backup, or backup that might kill you by accident ... when Moscow turned around and shot a prisoner in the head because-- fucking hell-- taking people alive meant more time before they could get the fuck out of whatever situation they were in it was hard not to cheer. Moscow is the cantankerous surrounded-by-idiots retail manager given a machine gun and thrown in a war zone. It's amusing. I don't get that from Vadim really. Instead Vadim feels like an episode of Law and Order: commits crimes for no reason then tells sob story about angsty past/present humanize himself.

And, frankly, Dan is even worse. There's no reason why Dan shouldn't have killed Vadim the six million times he had a chance. No reason why Dan should go from "ACK! No homo!" to sucking cock. The whole thing feels so forced and artificial .... I find it very hard to get into.

But this is just 25% of the way in ... and there were a lot of things I really liked (how Dan's rape is handled, the aforementioned village massacre, Vadim breaking under torture... the sex, oh yeah the sex is fucking hot *lol*) so, in between Bingo books, I will press on and hope for the best. ...more "
