“Eli shook his head. "When we first met, I thought you two were respectable."
"Really?" Sam sounded excited.
Ulysses didn't look over at them, even though he must have been working by feel in the dim light. "I knew taking this job was a mistake," he grumbled. "People hear you're a professor, that's the first thing they assume.”

“Laz nodded. "Whip a shitty and I'll show you the buyer's place."
Eli stared in mute incomprehension. After a moment, he cleared his throat. "I beg your pardon?"
"Make a U-turn." Laz tilted his head.
Eli finally put the car in gear. "What was that majestic piece of Midwestern vernacular? Whip a shitty?"
Laz rolled his eyes.”

“Eventually, he said, "I still don't entirely understand why you would, but I'm yours, if you want me. I have been for a while." He shut his eyes when he said it, and hoped Eli understood what he meant.
Eli curled up bonelessly against him, forehead on his shoulder, one leg draped over Laz's hips. "Wow," he said after a moment. "That was hardly self-deprecating at all. We'll make an optimist of you yet.”
