John Darrin, Co-Author of The Rockets’ Red Glare

I am delighted to have my friend and feisty former critique partner, John Darrin, author of Screenshot, with me today to chat with us about his new book, The Rockets’ Red Glare. John and I met almost a decade ago at the Maryland Writers Association annual meeting. I was new to fiction writing, but I knew I wanted to write mystery/suspense stories. John and I sat at the table marked MYSTERY and began talking about our works in progress, Some Other Child and his first book, The Law of the Pack. We subsequently worked in a group on our stories, with poor John being the only male. He was a very good sport and listened to a lot of feminist stories from our group host, Professor Lynn Buck.

John worked in the nuclear industry for 40 years, initially as a radiation health and safety professional, and most recently as a consultant for companies focused on nuclear and radiological disasters and homeland security. He worked on such unique projects as the first-ever decommissioning of a radiological research laboratory, the decommissioning of several nuclear reactors, the recovery after the Three Mile Island accident, the design and manufacture of radiation monitors for First Responders, and even on the treatment of nuclear weapons waste in China. His work has taken him all over the world, from China to Finland, from Central America to Canada, providing a wealth of experience and information that is reflected in his writings.
