When working in biology, I missed art. When working in art, I missed biology. It took a bout of multiple chemical sensitivities to limit me to writing. At last here was a niche in which I felt old-clothes comfortable. At last I could indulge all my interests, from art and science to nature and spirituality, from reality to fantasy. My most recent awards range from honorable mention to editor's choice for my science fiction and fantasy writing, which include Where the Sky Ends, Long Pig, and Train to Nowhere.

I grew up in the country and attended a country school. After high school, I car-pooled with my mother, older brother, and a kid from a neighboring farm to college. We were all students, and in those days, tuition cost less than $30 a se

I never believed in writer's block, until it happened to me when my hubby was hospitalized and almost died. He was so much on my mind, I couldn't work on my writing and in fact felt like never again writing. The passion was gone. What did I do? I wrote in my journal, pouring out my heart and my insights onto the page. And when the president of our writing group gave an assignment that would lead to a novel, I took part.

Various forms of writing exist, which can help with the writer's block. It's what you call, a change of pace. Sometimes it is writing letters, or a book review, or an article, or a journal, or poetry. This isn't to say you should drive yourself mercilessly to bleed a certain number of words onto a page for a fixed time. But take your time. Take a break. Do the dishes. Pull weeds. Go for a hike. Sing. Weep. Play games. Then come back to writing.

What if I had never kept writing in some other form? Would my passion have returned? I don't know. But after four or so years, it crept back like a shy seedling and is again in bloom. (less)

Thank you, Ram, for your question.

It certainly helps the reader if a writer knows grammar and how to communicate effectively. The writer should know the rules and be consistent. The writer should be familiar enough with the subject to earn the reader's trust.

Grayson, a Sportsman

Before Grayson and I met in our 60s, he’d lived an active life and brought many stories to our marriage.

Some people are hunters. Grayson was a sportsman. Grayson’s idea of fun was to get out in nature. If he bagged anything, he considered it a bonus. Whether hunting or fishing, he meticulously followed the rules. Added to that, he never shot birds unless they were in the air. He felt it unfair to
