Bias in Journalism

by Allie Burke

I am in my senior year of the Journalism and Mass Communication bachelor’s program at University of Arizona Global Campus.

Throughout my college career as a journalist, one thing has been consistent: be objective and do not be biased.

My dad watches a lot of Fox News, and I remember asking, when I was much younger (maybe in high school), what political party (Republican or Democrat) most journalists are. We were watching Bill O’Reilly if I remember. He answered, “they a...

Review: The Dead Don’t Die

I initially was enamored with the idea of a zombie movie with Bill Murray and Danny Glover, so I was really excited to watch The Dead Don’t Die. Unfortunately, it got very bad reviews. I mean, it has 54% on Rotten Tomatoes and 5.5/10 on IMDB. When I’m searching for a film to watch on my various streaming services, I wouldn’t consider a movie to watch with a 5.5. IMDB rating. But I just couldn’t get over how funny Adam Driver sounds when he says “ghouls” in the trailer so two years after it came ...

Video Series!

Did you know I have a new video series on YouTube?

That’s right, I have returned to YouTube after being away for a while, and am making a couple videos a week. The subject of the series is to read my books to you, but peppered in are things I want to talk about (like anime) and answers to questions I get from viewers about living with schizophrenia.

I am currently reading Violet Midnight, my debut novel. Check it out. 🙂

His Name is Dark by Allie Burke

His Name is Dark, a short story I wrote for an upcoming anthology, was published on Tuesday, April 27. I had it published as free until yesterday. It now costs money to buy (unless you have Kindle Unlimited), so I thought I’d publish it here for anyone who would like to read it. If you do read it, please consider leaving me a as reviews help me grow as a writer. Thank you, and I hope you like it.

Alana Salvador heard about Clearwater from a guy named Kevin. A friend, named Kevin. ...

My story is READY and it comes out on Kindle Tuesday, April 27. You can also read it here if you like, it will be free everywhere.

Check out the cover and synopsis below!

He stepped toward her and she gripped the knife in her back pocket.

“No,” he said quietly, in almost a whisper.

She looked up to the castle again. “People ac...

Aging has been a profoundly liberating experience

CW: suicide

I am 34. I turn 35 next month.

When I was young, I never thought about getting older. I didn’t really think I would live past 25 for some reason. When I turned 25, I felt so old. But I was so, so young.

When people in their twenties complain to me about turning 30, I always tell them that the 30s are the best. The 20s are so hard. I look back to some of my social media posts on those ‘memories’ things that everyone hates and asked myself how I could possibly be like that? ...

Don’t be like me

Today was the first day of a months-long disability leave.

A journalist interviewed me early in the pandemic, when I was working from home. She asked me a bunch of questions about how it felt to be living with schizophrenia in a pandemic. And at the time, I didn’t think it was any harder for me than it was for anyone else. I was paranoid, yes, but so is everyone else. Everyone I know is terrified of getting sick.

After about five months of working from home, I was asked to return to the ...

Dear Allie

Dear Allie,

You are a good person. You are loyal to your friends and you’re the first person to raise your hand when someone needs help.

You shouldn’t say those things to yourself. Things like irresponsible and lazy. You’re a hard worker. You always have been. You’ve taken every challenge ever put in front of you and done your best to overcome it. You’ve failed, sure, but everyone has, and the important thing is you’ve learned from those failures and have grown as a person.

You do yo...
