Soumyadipta ‘Shom’ Biswas is a senior sales executive, a newspaper columnist, a short-story writer, and a dabbler in sundry other things.

He used to have a weekly column on books at the New Indian Express, and his short stories have been published in literary magazines in India and Singapore, notably the Quarterly Literary Review Singapore (QLRS), Out of Print, The Bombay Review and Spark. He is a regular quizzer, notably having been a semi-finalist at the “University Challenge India” Quiz (2003-04) televised on BBC World. And he perhaps spends way too much time fussing over his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team.

He is a collector of antique sports books (Wisdens especially), and is a member of the Bangalore Writers Workshop.

Dwight Muhammad Qawi (1953-2025)

Most of you have probably never heard of Dwight Muhammad Qawi.

He passed away a couple of days ago, and here are a few thoughts about him.

Qawi was one of my all-time favorites – an embodiment of bravery, resilience, and sheer will. Despite standing just 5’6″, he fought from light-heavyweight all the way up to heavyweight, and made every inch count. His style was a masterclass in pressure and precis

I quite like the Kikira stories of Bimal Kar. They have some good detection in them, they are not very flashy or flamboyant, but are always well written. The characters are not larger-than-life heroes, which is, to me, a plus.

In this specific story,

"৩.৫/৫

Atonement by Ian McEwan
"I loved “Atonement” the first time. Loved it even more the second. This isn’t just good literary fiction – it’s the sort of thing that makes most of what’s marketed as “literary” look like homework for people who don’t read. I came back to it because" Read more of this review »
