Soumyadipta ‘Shom’ Biswas is a senior sales executive, a newspaper columnist, a short-story writer, and a dabbler in sundry other things.

He used to have a weekly column on books at the New Indian Express, and his short stories have been published in literary magazines in India and Singapore, notably the Quarterly Literary Review Singapore (QLRS), Out of Print, The Bombay Review and Spark. He is a regular quizzer, notably having been a semi-finalist at the “University Challenge India” Quiz (2003-04) televised on BBC World. And he perhaps spends way too much time fussing over his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team.

He is a collector of antique sports books (Wisdens especially), and is a member of the Bangalore Writers Workshop.

High Fidelity by Nick Hornby
"I came across a Twitter/X thread in which the Original Poster said she always discusses with her girlfriends how Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Quartet truly captures the female experience and psyche (love, jealousy, obsession et al) all too accurately," Read more of this review »

I hadn’t read the book earlier. I had, of course, seen the film, who hasn’t? I don’t think Satyajit Ray ever made a bleaker movie in his entire oeuvre than Jana Aranya. It’s a classic, yes, but a suffocating, claustrophobic one. No escape hatch. No l ...more
Meet the Savarnas by Ravikant Kisana
"In one of those typical exaggerations we often make in order to draw attention to a larger point, a friend recently declared that “every non-fiction book is simply a long-form article spread over 300 pages”. Meet the Savarnas is the sort of book whic" Read more of this review »
