Jacqueline Simon Gunn is an award-winning writer and Manhattan-based clinical psychologist. She is the author of both fiction and non-fiction books as well as many articles, both scholarly and mainstream. With her academic and clinical experience in psychology, Gunn’s novels tend to be psychological and thought-provoking. Always in search of truth, fiction writing, like psychology, is a way for her to explore human nature – motivation, emotions, relationships.

In addition to her clinical work and writing, Gunn is an avid runner, swimmer, yogi and reader, a serious cat lover and coffee connoisseur.

Inspiration for Running Backward

This book was not easy to write, but I thought the story was important to tell. As a younger person, I had always imagined that when I reached my 50’s I would have it all figured out. But our lives, our independent experience, our individual emotional and psychological development, the way we are always becoming, is a dynamic process that can’t be neatly measured. Lived experience is more of a flo

Another beautiful book by Eve Kasey, a master of the slow-burn romance, which I love. Emma and Wentworth are both extremely well-developed with backstories that make their choices, the tension and the conflict believable. Emma was so relatable too -- ...more

“Empty Spaces

I wanted to feel less.
To not be burdened by emotion,
To not feel sadness,
To not know loss.
I envied the inanimate,
The trees that stand proudly in winter,
Not missing their leaves.
I wanted to be weightless,
To not experience limitation.
I didn’t want time to pass,
The blur of days, months, years.
It moved too quickly,
I wanted to grasp on,
Hold it.
It eluded me,
Intangible,
Like light.
I wanted to preserve life before you were gone.
I didn’t want to know grief.

But the pain kept me connected.
It meant that I loved you,
It meant that I would always be a little broken,
It meant that our love filled all of the empty spaces.
It meant that you would be with me... forever.”
Jacqueline Simon Gunn

“Love was feeling the person everywhere, under your skin, in every strand of your hair, in your heart, in your bones, in the tone of your voice when you said their name. Love wasn’t always about being with the person, it was feeling that your world was better just because they lived. Even if you weren’t ever going to be together, he was the air you breathed, invisible but everywhere.”
Jacqueline Simon Gunn, Where You'll Land

“His absence was a presence.
Who knew an empty space could take up so much room.”

“He was footprints in the snow.

Not all loves are meant to last.
Some are meant to grace you briefly,
before fading,
somehow leaving the impression
that the world is just a little bit better
because you had been touched by
something so beautiful it was impossible
to grasp.”
